Is windows 2008 Firewall service required?

The firewall is not required but I wouldn't run a server on the open internet without some sort of firewall, either host or device.Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

As per my knowledge Firewall service (as a service) is needed and has to be enable, indeed OS also needed. However you can disable de firewall as firewall using the following cmdlet: netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state offCapecolMCSA - MCTS Exchange Server 2007 - 2010 - MCITP Messaging 2010Blog: http://capecol.spaces.live.com/default.aspx

Windows firewall is not required in any way.If you want it tirned off, use netsh command or disable it via admin GUI. Dont stop the windows service since it will give you some irrational behavior with packets dropped and some dont. If you really want to stop the firewall service, first configure it to be off and then you can stop the service. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com
