Is putting the Hub Transport Role on the Client access servers too much load?
We are currently planning our migration from Groupwise to Exchange. we are finalizing our hardware needs as well as how we can make it as highly available as possible while staying within budget. 8000 Mailboxes 30% Heavy, 40% Medium, 30% Light 60% Max Concurrency Max DB Size 50 GB Max Mailbox Size 75 MB 2+1 Cluster Normally no more than 500 users using Web Access at any 1 time ------------------------------------ Starting plan was to have 2 CAS servers (Dell 1950's, (2)Dual Core XEON Processors with 4MB Cache and 1333MHz FSB, 4GB RAM)load balancedwith a F5 BigIPand then to have 1 Hub Transport Server (Same Specs as above) and then the 2 +1 Cluster bringing up the rear with shared storage in the EMC SAN and 16 GB of RAM Each. -------------------------------- Question iscould we move the Hub Transport role out to the load balanced CAS servers and free up that piece of hardware for use on the Edge? It seems to me that with as much power as those boxes have and the fact that the Web usage will be rather low versus total mailboxes that they could easily handle it.. But then again this is our beginnig in the Exchange world so I thought I'd ask the people with the experience..... Thanks, -Prod

Hi, That is exactly the same design that I have just done for a client moving from GW 6.5 to E2007. Although you have approx 4 times the MBs than my client, given the spec of the boxes I don't think that should be a problem. Not sure about the exact Dell servers, but for HT role the same principle of providing disks for logs and DBs should be followed as the HT roles uses and EDB DB to perform conversion and queueing. Generally though I don't see a problem if you do this. Do a pilot to verify the spec of the boxes, adding more RAM would certainly be an easy option to help the speed of things. Cheers Nathan
