Is it possible to force Exchange to ignore Domain User's SMTP Email addresses and force mail out via the SMTP connector?
Greetings, I've set up MS Exchange mainly as a central mail store for my various outlook email users who have a mix of SMTP/ISP addresses. Also, it's convenient as it allows us to send larger email messages that our main ISP allows,by utilizing an Exchange SMTP connector. The problem arises when I have 2 users, who I have set up as Exchange users and who's reply-to/SMTP address have been set as (for example)abc@beltsouth.net and xyz@yehoo.com. As long asthese 2 users do not try to send mail to each other, mail is sent out via the SMTP connector and outside recipients get the mail at there respective ISP's. Everything is great. However, if abc@beltsouth.net tries to send mail to xyz@yehoo.com, the mailmessage is immediatelyrouted into xyz@yahoo.com's Exchange Mailbox without it getting sent to the user's external yehoo webmail account. My question is, is there a way to stop Exchange from being so efficient, and force the mail to get routed out via the SMTP connector to the ISP first? Our users are out of the office more often than not, and if abc@beltsouth.net sends something to xyz@yehoo.com while he's in Tokyo, xyz does not get the message because it is getting dumped very efficiently into hisExchange Mailbox and never leaves our site to his ISP webmail account. Thanks for any help. I sincerely appreciate it. -Patrick

Hi, Have you considered to change this setup because the above setup can't do what you want? 1.) Use the exchange completely and give the external users remote access wia OWA, active-sync or rpc over http 2.) If you have your ownsmtp domain you assign each user their own primary mail address within this domain. The external users can then have a forwarder configured to send to yahoo etc. Leif

I did start reading up on OWA later last evening. However, if it could be made to do what I like, that would be so much easier, as I like to keep as little access to the main server from the outside as possible. Of course, if I knewit could not be done the way I like,I would have to go that route. Thanks for the idea.
