Irritating error when trying to change computer name
Hi, I'm trying to change the names of a couple of new HP laptops on the network, but keep getting an odd error message. I log onto the laptop as network admin, try to rename the computer in System, get prompted to enter admin credentials, but then when I do I get this error: Multiple connections to the same server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Please disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again. I'm not connected using more than one user name etc,so I don't know what's going on at all. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Thanks....! Amy

mapped drives can cause this, as well as ipc connections. open a command prompt and type "net use" then use net use /d to any connection in the list. including ipc, if present.

Do you still have WINS in the environment? This happens a lot in NetBIOS environments where the records are not properly maintained as well.
