Intermittent OAB Issues Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients
So I am seeing very intermittent OAB download issues. To the point that if I force a OAB download via Send/Recieve - Download Address Book in Outlook, it will fail the first time, then work the second time. Almost every time. Both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 users see this issue. 2007 users see error code 0X80004005. 2003 users seem to be seeing 0X8004010F. Both client versions behave the same way in that they often fail the first time, and then if you try again immediately after it works. I have verified that the OAB folders are there in the public folders, and they are replicating between the two Exchange 2007 public folder stores we have. I have verified that the files are in the appropriate place on the Client Access servers as well. Plus if it was a Public Folder issue, I would think the 2007 users wouldn't see it. But if it was a URL / CAS issue, then 2003 wouldn't see it right? When I force a OAB rebuild on the generating server, it completes successfully, the only errors I see are for those users that were skipped for one reason or another in the generation process. So... any ideas on where I can start troubleshooting? Any ideas at all? Any way I can track where the client is trying to retrieve the list when it is failing, and then again when it is succeeding. I have opened up the connection status window when pulling a new OAB in OL2007, but never see any sort of connection to a CAS server. We have used the Add-AvailabilityAddressSpace to force some domains to Public Folders with interoperability with some Lotus Notes.. but that wouldn't cause OL2007 to go Public Folder for OAB would it? Any advice on what to look at would be appreciated. Thanks

First of all I apologize for the delayed response. I had read the blog before but it doesn't seem to apply to me (and the workaround doesn't work either). The appropriate OAB folders are in the PF stores, there are no sub-containers, and I have never deleted the OAB and recreated it with the same name. Also, just to make sure, I did create a totally separate OAB (with a totally new name) and marked it as the default OAB for a single test database. Then moved my mailbox to said database. No change in behavior. Hi,Sorry for the delay response. Thanks for your information. After viewing the configuration information, I have the below questions:How many CAS servers do you have in the environment? Was any error message received in the Application Event Log when rebuilding the OAB?I suggest you run OABInteg tool to do the check on the problematic Outlook 2003 client. You need to configure the Outlook 2003 to be run under Online Mode. Then run the command in the DOS.oabinteg /s:servername /t:oabfldcheck /s:2 /lhttp://blogs.msdn.com/dgoldman/archive/2007/03/08/how-to-use-oabinteg-s-oabfldcheck-and-proxytest-to-find-oab-issues.aspxAfter that, please send the log to me at v-allson@microsoft.comThanksAllen
