Installing Exchange Server cluster in two different office location but under one same domain for redundancy ?
Hi All, I have one box of Windows Server 2003 installed with Exchange Server 2007 SP1 (HT-CAS-MBx role) in my headquarter office, suppose I want to create another Exchange server 2007 box with similar role in the remote office (geographically different connected with 1 MB WAN link), which topology should I use so that in case one Exchange Server 2007 got died because of the Windows Update or server break down, my company can still send and receive email without interruption in both location. Any idea would be greatly appreciated. and also Hyper-V / VMware implementation can also be take into account if possible. Thanks/* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Hey Albert,In your scenario as Exchange 2007 is already installed on Windows 2003, you can go for SCR configuration.Refer to :-Standby Continuous Replicationhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676502(EXCHG.80).aspxManaging Exchange SCR Servershttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd367828.aspxNOTE: Its not an Automatic Failover !!For Automatic Failover, CCR would be the apt Topology but for Geographically different location you would have to CCR on Windows 2008 Hyper-VRefer to thread :-http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecovery/thread/831623c0-1334-49c2-a3f3-1bdcba4c405fRegardsSujit

AH SCR, yes I heard about that terms before. so this means If something happens to MailServer01 (the active primary) then what should I do to make keep the mail traffic flowing without service disruption ?/* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Hi Albert,If you are planning for SCR and want to active second office active then there is two optio to do that. Be remember taht you need to make it active manually.1: Database portability method Standby Continuous Replication: Database Portability http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738132(EXCHG.80).aspx2: Site Resilience methodStandby Continuous Replication: Site Resilience with Standby Clusteringhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738150(EXCHG.80).aspxIf you need automatic process for failover between two physical location then you may go for CCR deployement but it need good BW between both physical location but again CCR is not much prefered for two physical location.Anil

SCR will not activate without interruption. In fact, the service restoration process could be quite involved, and take a few hours if the person performing it know how to do it and has practived it, and it will likely involve data loss. Depending on the amount of mail volume being discussed, a 1MB link might not be anywhere near sufficient to carry all the log traffic. Albert, there is not a simple answer to your request. I suggest you hire a consultant to work through a solution, or you spend the time learning about the various clustering and replication technologies available to you. Further, you might consider Exchange 2010, which should handle the kind of thing you're asking for much better.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.". You're right Ed, So in this case i need to learn about Exchange Server 2010 with its Database availabilty group. With the SCR does that means i need to make the backup/standby exc.server as the primary and also changing my DNS MX records ? if so yes i'm aware taht there will be email lost during i do the change process. How come it takes one hour if i need to do it from Exchange Mgmt Console and also DNS mgmt.msc ?/* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Because it is not as simple as that, and I'm not in a mood to write the entire process for you. Please do some basic research on the process.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.".
