Installation aborts with error on accessing ExchangeSetup.log
Hello,I tried to install Exchange Server 2007 Beta 2 German on a fresh Windows Server 2003 Std English (with all updates), but it fails on "Organization Preparation" with the message---------------------------Microsoft Exchange---------------------------The process cannot access the file 'C:\ExchangeSetupLogs\ExchangeSetup.log' because it is being used by another process.---------------------------OK ---------------------------The only process using this file is DW20.exe. There is no virus scanner or other software installed (just .NET framework, MMC and PowerShell as Exchange requires). The last entries in ExchangeSetup.log:[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [1] Processing component 'Active Directory Schema' (Das Active Directory-Schema wird aktualisiert.).[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [1] Executing 'install-ExchangeSchema -LdapFileName ($roleInstallPath + "Setup\Data\"+$RoleSchemaPrefix + "schema0.ldf")', handleError = False[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [2] Launching sub-task '$error.Clear(); install-ExchangeSchema -LdapFileName ($roleInstallPath + "Setup\Data\"+$RoleSchemaPrefix + "schema0.ldf")'.[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [2] Beginning the task's processing.[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [2] Executing command '$error.Clear(); install-ExchangeSchema -LdapFileName ($roleInstallPath + "Setup\Data\"+$RoleSchemaPrefix + "schema0.ldf")'.[24.07.2006 20:36:21] [2] Processing one object in the task.[24.07.2006 20:36:22] [2] [WARNING] An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: The network path was not found.[24.07.2006 20:36:23] [2] [ERROR] The network path was not found.Does anybody know how to fix this problem?Sincerely,MartinEdit: The english version of Exchange Server aborts with same error.

I'm curious whether there are any event logs around the time of this error that may be of interest. It seems possible that there is an issue with the import of the schema, which istriggering Watson, which in turn isjumping in front of setup and locking the log. If we can get Watson off the log, you should be able to proceed.

Maybe a silly question, but is the machine in a domain, have prepared the domain and schema, can you connect to a DC, GC has replication occured, just a few ideas

This machine is its own DC with own domain. The organization preparation readiness checks before installation starts say everythings ok (except for the warning that x86 exchange should not be used for production).dcdiag reports no errorsnetdiag reports no errors except for: NetBT transport test failed. No NetBT transports are configured. There is another DC in the same subnet, but its other domain and forest.Wow, I can't believe it. Todays warning message (after I set drwtsn32.exe not to create a dump):Error: The network path was not found.Warning: An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated. The network path was not found.

I had the same Error message when installing Exchange 2007 Beta 2 English 32 bit. I haven't had much luck resolving this issue though.

This is a known issue. Watson locks the log file while posting a report. If you let watson finish (or kill dw20.exe) you should be good to go. Thanks, ~vivek

I am still getting this message and I have tried both letting dw20.exe finishing as well as killing the process but it still fails and if I rerun the setup it continues to fail at the same point. I'm getting pretty frustrated at this point.

Same here. There is no way to install Exchange. :-(

Even if I try just to run setup /PrepareAD, from the server I plan to setup exchange or from some other DC I'm getting the same error. Note that the Dr. Watson error is ther twice. By the way this is a brand new domain. Welcome to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Unattended Setup Preparing Exchange Setup Copying Setup Files ......................... I think I've found the solution to your problems. I've been struggling with this issuesince last night myself. I've tried everything I could think of and still couldn't get it right. But I did a search on older versions of Exchange installations with the error message network path not found. What I came up with, was a post saying that you need tostart the Remote Registry service. I've just done that and my installation has been successful.

Unfortunately that's not the solution for all of us. :-(Remote Registry service was already running...

Remote Registry did the trick for me. I ran setup /preparead from the DC (where I started remoteregistry) then installed on the server using the wizardwithout any issues. Thanks for saving me a sleepless night. Rudy

Remote Registry worked for me as well!

The RemoteRegistry on my Exchange Server was already activated but not on my PDC. So I activated it on all DC's and now it's working.

My error message was slightly different that that at the top of this thread, it read "An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: The network path was not found". The Remote Registry was running on the box that was going to get Exchange Server installed on it but not on the DC that I was using. The Exchange Server was running 64bit Windows Server 2003 R2 and the DC is running 32bit Windows Server 2003 R2. I started the Remote Registry service on the DC (I only have one DC in this lab) and it all worked fine.

Worked for me also, just remember to enable the remote registry service on a DC and run the setup /preparead on that DC. Thanks all
