Information store wont start. Ex2k7 on 2k8 server
Hi all! Ihad an exchange server running okay on this machine, until yesterday. I made a mistake in the setup of the CAL role, and uninstalled that role. Something went wrong i think, and now i cant install it again. Additionally i cant uninstall exchange completely, because my Information store wont start. I have searched around the netand was not able to find anything about these errors. Here are the event from my Eventlog: Event 1180: The description for Event ID 1180 from source MSExchangeIS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: 0x80004005 Event 5000: The description for Event ID 5000 from source MSExchangeIS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: 0x80004005 I cant start the information store no matter what i do. Any help is appreciated!

Hi, Please locate [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem], check whether Working Directory was missing. If it is, please add a new String Value and call it "Working Directory",enter the path for the working directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\\Mailbox\MDBTemp (Assume the Exchange installed under C:\) After that, please restart Microsoft Exchange System Attendant, and check Information service. Thanks Allen

Hi Allen! This problem was resolved on Friday. The solution: The problem was a missing REG key. i found this out by running the Exchange 2007 BPA, which returned the following error message on the server:The 'Services' string type value located in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup\Services' registry key is missing or inaccessible. The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service will not start. As a result, all services that depend on this service will not be able to start. Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285116 for more information. <<<<<This kB article actually says Applies to 2003, and not 2007 but it works all the same! I followed the KB article to restore the missing key, and everything is now working. What i dont understand is why a working installation could somehow remove this reg key by itself, but maybe thats just something you shouldnt think about! :0) Thanks for your suggestion all the same! /Holger
