Inbound message size - Exchange 2003
Help. I am trying to remove the size limitations on inbound mail for an organization that I consult for. I first removed the default receiving message size limitfrom the message delivery global settings. That didn't work. I then found this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298572that said that message categorizor can't differentiate between incoming and outgoing messages (!) so I removed the limit on outbount messages as well*. No dice. These folks want to be able to send files between 10-20 MB. Sure, I have tried to get them to use FTP and have explained that 10MB is still a common limit on most gateways but they are paying me to make it work. What am I overlooking? Thanks, Bruce PS I have not restarted the Exchange Services or rebooted the server since making this change. Could that be it?

There are some places that you configure for message size. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679/ I think you may have a limit on your Wirtual SMTP server.

Well, the below was what I originally posted, but since the moderator posted while I was typing.. Oh well. I was going to ask whether you checked the SMTP Virtual server, connector and user mailbox settings, but the link you provide has a link to the article that talks about each. Have you reviewed the article that was linked from the one you provided? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679/

No, I missed that. I think I have removed the restrictions from the Virtural SMTP server but I will confirm. Thanks.

I checked everywhere that the article mentions andno restrictions appear to be present. I restarted the information Store service just for chuckles and still get the following when trying to send an 11MB attachment: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: 11 MB file attached Sent: 9/6/2007 3:32 PM The following recipient(s) cannot be reached: 'bpalmer@clientsdomain.com' on 9/6/2007 3:36 PM 552 Message size exceeds maximum permitted Any more ideas of what could be preventing delivery? ~Bruce

Is those mail sent to a PF or did you perhaps use OWA when sending it? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304307/en-us PF has a default limit on 10MB

No, the message was sent to my Exchange mailbox on my client's SBS 2003 server. OWA was not part of the process. Bruce

Thanks, Lasse. I have been working for other clients this week but this is still a hot topic. Both of the articles you linked are for Exchange 2007. Are they equally applicable to Exchange 2003? Bruce
