In a Dilemma, need help.
I am currently faced with an issue I need to resolve quickly. I just started working for a company and they only have one (1) server running 2008 R2 and Exchange on it. The ex-employees did not know what they were doing and didn't follow MS Best Practices so I need to change things. I have a spare server that is a single processor that I would rather move the AD to and leave exchange on the current box as it has a dual core processor and 2gb more memory (6gb). It was suggested in the Server forum that I move exchange to the other box and although it would be a quicker solution as I would need to move company files, etc I am not sure which way to go. We currently have 20 employees and this is expected to change soon. Both servers have RAID 6 and with 7tb of space. Thoughts on this please? Also if I did move the AD to the spare server what impact would there be if any to exchange if all the roles were moved and the server demoted to member server? Regards, Bob

Hi, It is not supported to run dcpromo on an Exchange server - see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997060(EXCHG.80).aspx So you will need to move Exchange first to a third server, then move Active directory and then move Exchange back to the desired server Leif

Agree with Leif. Or just install additional DC on the spare server. Frank, Yes there is. I am using a spare server we have as a new DC and will be ordering another server next week for Exchange. I am going to move the Echange to the new box while leaving DC on the old box for high availability. New job and work is hectic so all should be done hopefully by end of next week. Thanks, Bob
