Importing EML files into Outlook 2010
Hi everyone,

I recently migrated from Windows Mail to Outlook 2010 Beta. How do I import the eml files to Outlook? Dragging the EML files to an Outlook folder does not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Outlook doesn't use EML files. From Windows Mail, use File, Export. Choose Exchange Server (it exports to Outlook). You will need to be using 32 bit Outlook to do this.

Diane,

What's the option if you're using 64 bit outlook?  it doesn't seem to work.  Outlook 2010 will natively open the .eml file but if i try and drag and drop as I used to be able to in the past it wants to attach them to a new email.

Thanks,

Justin

You'll need to do it from a 32bit version - Mail/Live mail do not recongise outlook 2010 64 bit.  Dropping EML files into Outlook folder has always created new messages with attachments - this is nothing new.

ETA: if you can email the messages as attachments, you can drag them from the message and drop them in the Inbox.  This obviously works best if there aren't hundreds of messages to convert. :)

There are 3rd party utilties that can make the conversion but they may not work with the 64bit version. See http://www.slipstick.com/config/convmsg.htm for a list of programs that can make the conversion but i don't know if any of them work with 64bit outlook.

Yikes, talk about convoluded...I got around it by installing Virtual PC, exporting my WLM from my x64 machine to the VPC x86 and then reimporting it (after of course having to d/l and install WLM).  Then had to install outlook, create a blank .pst and import it, then copy the pst off and then back in to Outlook x64.  Yikes, yikes yikes.  HOpefully there is extended 64 bit support for this otherwise it's just another nail in the coffin of WLM.

However, thanks for the guidance Diane and maybe see you in Seattle in a few weeks :

Most users only need to export from Mail once, when they switch to outlook - its not a daily or weekly thing. If you are exporting from mail frequently, you need to look hard at why you use both. Since WLM has a calendar, many users will do better with it, unless they need other features only outlook has.

I have no idea if WLM export to 64bit will ever work, but unless you need to work with mega quantities of data, the 64bit version offers no advantages, only disadvantages when you need addins or compatibility with other applications. (I ended up putting 32 bit on my tablet so i can use addins, 64bit is on the desktop.)

Looking in the big picture though what you say above is one of the main reasons I switched from WLM back to Outlook.  I didn't really feel I needed a robust programme as outlook, however the calendaring in WLM is lacking...so much so that it doesn't even support .ics files!

As for the architecture, almost every laptop/desktop today is 64 bit compatible and with memory as cheap as it is, I think we'll see a greater push towards that arch...however, you are correct in that not many people move their mail as frequently as I'm doing/trying to do...but then again, being in technology warrants us to be guinnea pigs :)

Thanks!

I have Windows 7 and Office 2010 ands I am in the process of exporting emails from Thunderbird to Outlook.

So far I have all the relevant emails stored on the laptop in .eml format.

I now wish to get these in to Outlook with out having to install Windows Live Mail.

Any suggestions?

Boo-ya, thims! That site was dead on!

I had to comply with a legal request for >500 emails and the archiving appliance spit them all out in .EML format. I've been looking for some way to be able to sort through these, specifically to be able to see the dates and using the "Import EML Files" utility from the above mentioned website did it perfectly. Thanks again!

The addons provided by OutlookFreeware.com were indeed great. I was able to migrate all my emails from thunderbird into outlook, and it retained everything dates, structure etc.

Thanks,

Gaurav
