Import/merge 2003 DB into 2007 DB? can it be done?
seems our backup team has been laging behind backing up our exchange 2003 and 2007 servers and after migrating users to our 2007 mailbox, our 2007 mailbox server crashed. I have backup of our 2007 database with half of our migrated users from 2003 and another backup with the 2003 db containing the other half of our users that were later migrated then 2007 crashed after they were migrated but before a full backup of 2007 could occur.Just throwing this out there, can the exchange 2007 recovery storage group mount a 2003 db and merge it into a 2007 db? Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, no...RSG does not support mounting mailbox databases from previous versions of Exchange. This is documented here, under "Limitations of Recovery Storage Groups": http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124039(EXCHG.80).aspx

But in E2K7, there is only .edb file.Which means the file system is different. Hence you will not be able to mount a E2K3 server's database in E2K7 database. This applies for both RSG and production.A resolution to help you out:Quoting: "I have backup of our 2007 database with half of our migrated users from 2003 and another backup with the 2003 db containing the other half of our users that were later migrated then 2007 crashed after they were migrated but before a full backup of 2007 could occur".In this case, you need to check if the database in E2K7 can be mounted with a soft recovery. If not, you can perform a hard repair on the exchange server 2007 database using eseutil /p (which may/may not have data loss), followed by a defragmentation (eseutil /d) and isinteg and mount the stores.(OR)If you are ok in restoring the exchange server 2003 back-up that was taken before the users were migrated, you can restore that in RSG and connect the mailboxes that were moved to exchange server 2007. You need to Remove the homeMDDBL attribute in the exchange server 2007's database in ADSIEDIT (which will ensure that the user/s are no more connected to the exchange server 2007) and move the mailboxes once the exchange server 2007 is up.All the best :)- Nagesh
