Import-Mailbox fails with error -2147221219 - Exchange 2010
Hi, Whenever we try to run the cmdlet "Import-Mailbox we are receiving error message -2147221219. This is all the more annoying as we recently rebuilt our virtual Exchange 2010 environment and it was working perfectly as before. I have ran the command: New-ManagementRoleAssignment –Role “Mailbox Import Export” –User “Administrator” and confirmed that this has applied, and both the Import and Export commands can now be run. I had read that this is a better option than granting a particular account FullAccess rights to each mailbox that you want to perform this type of operation on. This account is also an Enterprise Admin and a member of the "Organization Management" Role Group. I have also tried explicityly granting that user Full Access rights to the mailbox in question and still receive the same error. I'm not sure what difference there is between the new environment and the old but I am certain that before all I did was run that command above and it worked flawlessly. Can anyone shed any light on this? Howard

Hi, I'm sure I searched for that error code and didn't return anything. Anyway, yes it certainly looks the same issue. If it is confirmed as a bug that would ease my mind somewhat as I couldn't for the life of me think of what I had done differently. To clarify the situation we have a development domain running on Hyper-V R2 and SCVMM. In the initial install we had created replica Server 2003 DCs and then built 2008 R2 DCs and migrated services over to these and then decommissioned the 2003 DCs and built Exchange 2010. In that environment it worked. In this new environment we started with only 2008 DCs and it doesn't. Maybe that has something to do with it. i.e the domain and forest prep for 2003? UPDATE: I just tried out the workaround: Create a new server and make it GC Installing Exchange 2010 with Mailbox, CAS and HT roles Install Outlook 2010 Move the mailox(s) to the default database on this server. Run import and then move back to original database. As workarounds go its fiddly but it does work.

Of course the real answer would be for Microsoft to release a patch or hotfix for Exchange. And for such a function to be broken like this really does surprise me.

I have the exact same issue. I still have not been able resolve this. Think I'm gonna have to revert back to 2007. We have a migration scheduled next month and there is no way I am visiting 150 clients individually to import .pst files through outlook. If anyone here's anything on this please let me know.

No, logging in as the Administrator account does not help. As I said the workaround was to build a new server as in my post above. It looks like the proper fix is going to be SP1 where they have also made it possible to run the import/export scripts without Outlook installed.

We installed Outlook 2010 RTM today on our exchange server (we didn't want to use beta's on our production server) But we also get the -2147221219 error.....

I have also installed the Exchange 2010 Server and am getting the: "Error occurred in the step: Approving object. error code: -2147221219" Any updates? This is keeping me from deploying my Exchange 2010 install to production. If I can't import mailboxes... I can't use Exchange 2010.

Answer from microsoft : Based on my research, this could be a known issue. This issue is expected to be fixed in update rollup 5 of Exchange 2010 server. As a workaround, keeping the CAS server and Mailbox server on different machines may alleviate the issue. For example, in order for Export-Mailbox to PST file to work, we may need to have at least two Exchange 2010 servers: 1. With CAS+HUB+MBX 2. With MBX + Outlook 2010 and from over here we run Export-Mailbox to PST

Just tried Stephan's solution and it fixed me right up! My scenario was identical, fortunately I had anther VM ready for Ex2010 so it was a quick, easy fix. Hope MS solves this little anomaly in SP1.

Anyone knows when microsoft is going to fix this issue? At the moment I'm trying to bypass the problem creating an MBX+Outlook 2010 as Stephan says. I will post the conclussions.

Ok, it Works without problems: CITY 1: -------------------- SERVER 1: W2003 Active directory SERVER 2: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise NODE A->Mailbox+Client Accens+Hub transport SERVER 3: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise NODE C:->Mailbox + Office 2010 Pro (64bit) ->User for import/export mailboxes (I must say, import mailboxes is very slow... a 300MB mailboxes is about 25 minutes to migrate with a doble core server w 4GBRAM) CITY2 -------------------- SERVER 4: Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise NODE A->Mailbox+Client Accens+Hub transport The WAN is a 4mb dedicated. Sigh, this do not work for me ... In a test environment built by a clean installation of Windows 2008 R2 domain on a virtual achine and a clean installation of Exchange 2010 RU3 on another virtual machine this work fine, but on the production enviroment built by 2 Windows 2008 R2 domain machine (migrated from a previous 2003 domain) and an Exchange 2010 RU3 (migrated from a previous 2003 Exchange installation) did not work. The error is the same (see below), at this point I think that is another permission problem but I am unable to find what I must change... Some one has any idea??? This fix worked for me, but is uber-scary. (And linking to a site in German, seriously???) Anybody know the potential ramifications of giving the system account open access to Exchange--or messing with ADSI edit in your live Exchange system??? FIX THIS BUG, MS. And while we're at it, reverse this addiction to cmdlet and scripting. Put the major repetitive admin functions back in the GUI where they belong. Enough with the annoying geek malarky. It's called "right-click, import" sheesh. Still can't see a list of user mailbox sizes without going command line. TOTAL BS from people who don't have to admin for a living. I'm so tired of relearning syntax and scripting grammar and pipes and type-o's and "this works in this case, but not if you're standing on one leg." This Powershell nonsense is powerful to about 3 people who have mastered it. Uber-cool if you like spending 5 hours trying to figure out how to script a task that should take 3 seconds in a GUI. ADModify was out like what...7 years ago and is still better than the whole Exchange Management Console? Yeah, because I looooove piping crap to a CSV, opening in Excel to see things instead of looking at the GUI...and crossing my fingers my script is right and chasing a bazillion red text errors on Google. So many improvements in 2010, yet handicapped by a company which refuses to finish its products before releasing them and doesn't listen to customers. If managing a mail system by command line is fun for you--get a life.
