I can't get any emails to automatically forward
I have created a contact in AD with an external SMTP address and I have configured delivery options for a user so that emails should be automatically forwarded to this contact. 90% of the time the emails do not forward. I have tried un-ticking the box that reads "deliver emails to both forwarding address and mailbox" and I haven't been able to get any emails to send to the external address at all. Would anyone have any idea why this is not working? Thanks in advance tooner

UPDATE: It seems it's only internal emails that are forwarding

In your configuration, mail will travel to the target address of the contact.you should be able to verify mail trasnsport with message tracking logs on Exchange server.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Thanks for replying! http://www.flickr.com/photos/32175921@N08/3749234452/ I'm no expert but it looks like it's sending to his mailbox and then sending to the contact via smtp. Problem is they aren't arriving at the target address of the contact. There's no NDR and all other emails sent out via smtp work fine. Any suggestions?

Yes I have changed the address to my own to make it easier to test. I am also communicating with someone on their domain via email at the same time so I am sure the emails to my address work. UPDATE: to be more precise I can send from OWA direct to the AD contact and all emails arrive ok

I haven't got any further with this unfortunately. The emails that do get delivered seem to be completely random. It's probably about 10% or so. The message tracker shows exactly the same for both emails that arrive with the forwarding contact and those that don't. If there's no easy way to resolve this can someone suggest an alternative method please? Thanks PS I'm not sure if this makes any difference but I'm using SBS 2003 and the pop3 connector

Hi Tooner, Please create a new contact which is a Hotmail account and then set a forward for this contact. Does it work? We need to know if the issue only happen on some specific domains. From the message tracking log, we could see the mail is transferred thought SMTP. At this time, we need to confirm if the remote server block your email. Please contact their mail admin to check their SMTP log, to see if you server tried send the mail to them. Thanks, Elvis

Hi I have tried several different domains. What is really strange is that if I set up forwarding in Outlook (client rule) it doesn't work either. However it shows in the sent items. When I send directly it works fine. The outgoing server is the broadband provider and I have a feeling it would be difficult to get them to check logs for me. I'm completely baffled!

If you create a rule in outlook that do reply or forward, you must allow this on the organization level (remote domain) for mail to leave Exchange organization. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Use ESM, goto, Global Settings, Internet message fomrat.right click and create a new "Domain ..."Specify the destination SMTP domain that you want to change settings for, on the Advanced tab marke the checkbox "allow automatic forward" and "allow automaric reply"there is also a default domain setting that sets this for all domains unless specified ecplicit.next step is to create a rule in outlook that either forwards or sends an automatic reply to mail. This is however not the recomended way of doing what you want. This can cause mail loops which can cause all kind of trouble. The solution with a mailenabled contact specied on a mailbox alternate delivery should make the mail to the mailbox go to the contacts target address.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Thanks, I have now been able to get forwarding to work using a server side rules setting in OWA. However when I use the better method it still doesn't work even though I am sending to the same contact. It would be nice to get it working but this method will have to do. Thanks for everyones time! tooner
