Hi Pradeep

The Word for Developers forum targets programming questions that developers have about how to code Word. Your question belongs in an end-user venue and I will move it to the TechNet forums. You're more likely to find people there who have more experience with the scenario you describe.

For what it's worth, however: A lot of changes have been made to Word's layout engine in the thirteen or so years between versions. It's quite possible, therefore, that this is affecting how Word generates the automatic line breaks in the document text.

Another possibility is that the document is actively linked to the Normal.dot template and it's picking up formatting information (style defintions) that are different than those that were used in the old version. This would change layout, and perhaps even font face and size. Should this be the issue, the answer would be to unlink the document from the template in the old version.

What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting?

Why has my page layout changed when I open my document on a different machine?

First, you should not be mass converting Word 97 documents to Word 2010. Documents are historical items, not something to be used as the base for future work on a regular basis. For future work, you want to be using templates.

My guess is that another difference is that you have a different operating system on the computer with Word 2010 than the one with Word 97. This is not necessarily the case but is likely.

The two articles linked above may answer most of your questions. There are two principal issues: a different printer driver, and a document setting to update styles from the template.

Note also, there is a difference between opening a Word 97-2003 style .doc file in Word 2010 and converting it to Word 2010. When you convert to .docx format, there can be some formatting c
