I Need Help With Corrupted Environment Variables?
Hi,I a while back I installed some software that created two environment variables and added itself the 'PATH' environment variable. When I uninstalled the software I manually removed the two environment variables and the deleted the changes to the 'PATH' environment variable. My issue is that when I give the 'env' command from a dos or cygwin window I am told that the two environment variables and the 'PATH' environment variable still exist.I have searched the registry and the file system for references to the original program and to the environment variables but I can't find anything that indicates why these environment variables keep showing up.I'm running XP Pro.Any ideas?

Right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Then, click the Environmental Variables button. Look through this list of YOUR environmental variables and the system's and see if the ones in question are there. You can also look in the C:\Autoexec.bat file. Yes, Windows will STILL look at the file for environmental variables. You might have better luck with this question (if I did not get it answered correctly) by posting in the Vista forums. There are more desktop operating system gurus hanging about there. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=204&SiteID=17 Hope this helps, Jim

I thought that those actions were implicit in my explanation of the problem and how I had attempted to solve it. But to make it clear, I have previously done the steps that you mention when I first removed the environment variables. They are not listed, but show up anyway as I previously described. And I do not have an autoexec.bat file. on any of my drives.

Sorry about that. I was not sure if you had checked all those places. Posting a question on the Internet is a tedious balance between providing enough information for those that read it and not posting so much that no one will read it. It is possible that it is being set in one of the Run or Run once registry keys or who knows where else. Take a look at the AutoRuns utility from Sysinternals / Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx This may give you a clue as to where this is loading.
