IMAP account in Outlook sends on behalf of Exchange account?

Weird one here, but I can't find anything online about it. It is surely quite a common scenario though.

It's been tested with Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 from different locations and machines.

We have a single Outlook profile, with two email accounts configured.

- user@domain1.com - Exchange account (Office 365)
- user@domain2.com - IMAP account (hosted elsewhere)

We simply want to have the two accounts in Outlook as separate accounts as the user works for two different companies.

HOWEVER... Here is what happens when he tries to send from his user@domain2.com account.

- He clicks 'New Email' and changes 'From' to his user@domain2.com account.
- The email sends, but goes into the Sent Items of the user@domain1.com account.
- The recipient sees the sender as 'user@domain2.com on behalf of user@domain1.com.

This happens for any email he tries to send from his IMAP account.

Tried...

- Adding the accounts the other way around, setting the IMAP as the default account.
- Flicking through all the account settings, everything is normal, it's just a standard IMAP account.
- Can't see anything in the Outlook Mail/Advanced options that might change this.
- IMAP account works absolutely fine if the Exchange account isn't present in the Outlook profile.

Can anybody shed some light on this one?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam,

How long does this issue lasted?

Is user@domain2.com an Exchange account but configured via IMAP in Outlook? If so, please contact your Exchange admin and check if the IMAP account has been granted Send On Behalf permission.

Please let me know the result.

Hi Steve,

The issue has happened since we first set it up in Outlook. The same scenario has since been tested with some different accounts and the same thing happens.

As I mentioned, user@domain2.com is not an Exchange account, it is an IMAP account that is absolutely nothing to do with the user@domain1.com Office 365 account.

Also, the whole issue is that I don't want it to 'Send on behalf of' user@domain1.com, it should just show as being from user@domain2.com, since they are completely separate email accounts.

Thanks,

Sam

Are there any other suggestions or is this just a bug of Outlook? Seems odd if it is, since there must be other people who run separate Exchange and IMAP accounts in the same profile in Outlook?

Are there any updates to this issue? I have just come across the exact same scenario and can't seem to figure it out. We are using Outlook 2010 version 14.0.7140.5002 (32bit)  Any email sent from the IMAP account goes out through the Exchange account and then shows up at the recipient as being sent on behalf.

Hi Mike,

No, still not heard anything but nice to hear that it's not just me! My colleague also came across the exact same thing, with a different company. Weird.

I have tried everything I can think of and am really surprised that there doesn't seem to be any mention of this issue anywhere else online...
