Hyperlink gets removed when using interal unc paths. (when sending mail to external organizations)

Hi,

When a user from our Exchange server sends a mail with an internal hyperlink lik: \\server\data to an external organization like gmail. The link gets removed. Is this normal behaviour and can we disable this?

The reason why i am asking is because now we are moving to office 365 but we are not able to do this with a hybrid environment first. So when we send a mail from on prem to office 365 he see's this as sending it to an external org (i think). We tested this sending to gmail with the same result.

Since we are moving loads of mailboxes and there will be a descent amount of time between everybody on prem and everybody in office 365. We will have lot of helpdesk calls if we can't get this sorted :s

PS: I know this is the Exchange 2013 Forum, but i can't select a 2007 forum & this is probably the same in a 2013 enviro

No, it's not normal for Exchange, although it might be for gmail (it might be considered unsafe). Have you tried doing it like this

file://server/data

?

BTW, you might not be the only person to experience this

Hi, thx for your reply.

It is not a gmail problem, since we have the exact same issue when sending mails from our office 365 to the on premises and vice versa.

I have already tried this with the file:// format but same thing happens.

We send messages with such links in all the time here, and have never had a problem.

It might be worth looking at the source of the one of the affected messages received by your on-premises server (Outlook has an option for this), to see if the link is actually still there, but Outlook is refusing to show it.  Although I've never heard of that, either.

If you are typing the link in direct from the keyboard, does it make any difference if you use Outlook's built in hyperlink editor (right-click message body, and select 'hyperlink')?

Well it's not outlook that disables it, because we have the same when using only OWA.

typing it direct, hyperlink editor all makes no difference whatsoever. This is a very strange problem. & when googling i think we are the first :P
