Hub Server - Edge Server
Hi I'm about to purchase Exchange 2007 I have a server running Server 2003 x64 that I'm going to use for Exchange 2007 I then read the white paper and it informs me that I need 2 servers TheHub Server inside my network and an Edge Server on the perimeter I then read the following page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7d5cedbe-91c8-4087-8b7e-e0e2f6cb6959.aspx which says "If you do not have an Edge Transport server, you can configure the Hub Transport server to relay Internet messages directly. You can also install and configure the Edge Transport server agents on the Hub Transport server to provide anti-spam and antivirus protection inside the organization." If you can run the Edge server on the Hub server why does the white paper not say this? How are other people setting the servers for Exchange Server 2007? Thanks Hermann

There is a lot of confusion regarding Edge Transport. Edge Transport is a separate server role that is designed to run "stand alone" and be placed in the perimeter network. It is a "competitor" to products such as Symantec SMTP Gateway, Trend's SMTP Gateway, or other 3rd party SMTP message hygiene systems. The Edge Transport role CANNOT be installed with any other E2K7 server role. However, the Edge Transport is also optional. If you have another 3rd party product in your perimeter network or you use a managed provider for handling spam and viruses before the messages arrive on your network, you can keep using that. Edge Transport has a few advantages such as integration with each user's safe sender list, recipient synchronization, and using the same management interface as Exchange 2007. What you may be thinking about "Edge" being installed on "Hub" is that you can install the anti-spam agents that run on the Edge. On the Edge Transport server, you use the install-AntispamAgents.ps1 script to install these additional agents. It is not ALL of them, but it is most of of the useful ones. That way you can direct inbound mail directly to E2K7 and still get some of the anti-spam features. I have two customers that do this in this way. Does this all make sense?

Edge Transport server is a stand alone role of an Exchange server 2007. You may not need to puchase another hub trasport server if your organisationcomes under SMB.
