How to turn off start up welcome screens and question with mandatory profiles

I'm upgrading our student computer with office 2013 Pro. Mandatory profiles are set here so students get the same screen each time a class logs in. The profile is downloaded from the server each time the student logs in but It keeps asking if you want to select Office as the default program to documents with.

I have used the Office Customization Tool to modify the following

Disable first run movie = enabled

Disable Office first run on application boot = enabled

Prompt the user if word is not the default application for this file extension = enabled

But It still asks that question if you want to make Office the default app.

I have uninstalled office and reinstalled it with the modifications listed above but no luck.

Can some one point me in the right direction here?

Hi,

For this one: Prompt the user if word is not the default application for this file extension = enabled

It seems you need to keep it disabled.

As I'm not sure where these policies are, would you please provide detailed paths of them in OCT?

Hi,

Thanks you for posting the image.

As mentioned in the description,  "If you enable this policy setting, users will never be prompted on program start whenever any of these file types are associated with other applications. If the policy is Enabled, the checkbox under File->Options-> General -> Start up options-> Tell me is Disabled and Unchecked."

To make sure the policy is applied, would you please open Word and see if the checkbox is disabled and unchecked?

Hi,

It seems you see this message below:

Based on the settings in your image it shouldn't prompt for the message, could you please click on the "Default Programs" button, check whether Word has been set as default?

Offten the simple way to fix something is the hardest to find.

When running Offie 2013 word from a mandatory profile changes you make the the application are not saved to ntuser.man because it's not writable.  So, rename it to ntuser.dat login as the user that is using the profile (in our case student log in's) start word and any other office program needed and go through the start up procedures as you would for a first time run.   Then log off that user account and rename the ntuser.dat back to ntuser.man.  (In our case the profile is stored on a file server).
