They were running exchange server 2003 at the time (2008) and have since migrated to exchange 2007. They have the back for the exchange 2003 and would like to retrieve this message from a user’s mail box. So, what is the most efficient way to do?

You'll need to restore that backup to an Exchange 2003 Recovery group, then export the message you need to a PST. Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Hi, I'm afraid you cannot restore the backup to a Exchange 2003 RSG. "To use a Recovery Storage Group, the Active Directory topology of the Exchange Server 2003 computer must be intact and must be in the same state as when the copy of the database was made. This means that the mailbox or the mailboxes that you want to recover must not be deleted or purged from the system, or moved to a different database or to a different server." http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126 And Exchange 2007 RSG does not support mounting mailbox databases from previous versions of Exchange Server. So maybe you have to configure a separate Microsoft Active Directory directory service forest on a recovery server.Frank Wang

Hi, I think only below step will help you : > Build Alternate Recovery Server in another Forest/Domain other then original production environment. > Test AD Forest and Domain > Test AD Forest and Domain had Exchange 2003 SP2 installed in it with same Org name and OU paths as production Exchange Environment > Use similar hardware as orginal production server > Give server same name as original server, patched OS to same level as server to be recovered > Install Exchange 2003 SP2 on server > Configur Storage Groups, Database and Transaction log data paths and file names to match original production server > Set databases to be overwritten by a restore > go back to old backups you had on this server and had them restore data for one of the Storage Groups and Databases > Restore successful so then reconnected one of the mailboxes to make it active > Perform an Exmerge on the reconnected mailbox and was able to extract required data Dinesh

Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp can open ANY offline copy of the Exchange store (EDB, LOGS etc and supports Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 & 5.5) and then you can browse any mailbox or item, search for items based on the desired criteria and then export to PST, MSG or XML or Drag-n-Drop directly into the SAME or ALTERNATE Live Server OR and it works cross version as well i.e. you can move items from an older EDB (Say 5.5, 2000, 2003, or 2007) into a newer Live Production Server version 2007 or 2010 etc. Troy Werelius Lucid8

Hi Charlie, Mark is saying right ! you can retrieve even a single mail with the help of RSG and in Exchange 2003 it is very easy.Just create RSG and restore database there then you can retrieve your user mail with the help of eseutil to pst. I have done it many time without any hassle. Thanks Amit Rawat

Because from KB: This means that the mailbox or the mailboxes that you want to recover must not be deleted or purged from the system, or moved to a different database or to a different server. Frank Wang Yes Frank, it is possible to mount in RSG but not in mailbox data as database has been moved. After restoring in RSG with the help of eseutil we can retrieve all mails. Again Frank, i am not saying we can restore Exchange2003 backup on Exchange2007. Thanks

I might add that the batik up is an online backup using ntbackup. So I don't have the .edb file to restore

So that I understand this correctly you are saying that You are using NTbackup? When you say Online I assume you mean that your backing up Exchange while its Online? What medium are you backing up to i.e. Tape or Disk? If you backed up to disk then Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp can crack open the native NTbackup file to extract the Exchange files i.e. EDB, LOGS etc and then grant you granular access to browse or search all mailboxes and individual items for export, recovery or import actions. FYI Just in case you happen to be using VMWare DigiScope can also crack open and extract Exchange data direct from .VMDK files Troy Werelius Lucid8

Ok. So how do I create an exchange recovery group Hi Charliesrh, One more thing, do you keep your old Exchange 2003 in your organization? I guess you have removed your Exchange 2003 server. I should have ask it ago. If you still have the Exchange 2003, you can recover data.I tested it in my lab. But without the old Exchange server, you cannot restore the backup to Exchange 2003 RSG. Please let us know whether you have Exchange 2003 server or not. Hi Amit, I guess you are talking about with the Exmerge data to pst.Frank Wang
