We just started using Exchange 2003 at my office. We dont really have a "IT" person. Me and my partners, (me really) kind of set everything up using how-to-guides from the Internet. Everything seems to be running ok (thankfully), however...we have had to let a few of our employees go recently. I removed them from the Active Directory system and the email account is automatically removed with that. However, I cant figure out how to remove names from the Global Address List. I have not had much luck in finding answers online, so I am hoping I can get some help in here. Thanks for you time.

That person should be removed from the GAL as soon as you delete there account sometimes it takes a few mins, sometimes outlook cached mode can cuase you to still see people in the GAL, try turning off exchange cached mode, close outlook > control pannel > mail > email accounts > view or change existing > double click microsoft exchange server account > untick cached mode > next and finish > close email accounts and reload outlook and see if the user is still there.

Right, I thought the person was supposed to be removed with the deleting of the account. I tried what you said, and I am still getting seeing the old users in the GAL. Is there a way to removed them on the server side?

Something else you can try, open exchange system manager expand Recipients > click on All Global Address Lists > in the right hand pane right click Default global address list and go properties > in the Default global address listproperties click preview > a list of users should come up > scroll through and see if you can find the user you want to get rid of if it is in the list right click on the user and select delete.

Make sure your RUS (Recipient Update Service) is running properly. You may want to also do a rebuild on the offline address book

Please download the offline address book in outlook using below steps Start outlook click on Tools ->click on send/receive ->click on Download Address Book ->Uncheck Download changes since last send/Recieve then click on Ok Vinod

Also , you can hide it from exchange address list in AD under exchange advanced in User properties. Easy way but works. Just disabling the account and hiding from exchange address list will serve the purpose.RegardsUsman

Usman, What you suggested it how I would normally do it, but it didn't work today. The departed user still appears in the GAL, when viewed from Outlook on the computers of other users. Server 2000/Exchange 2003, Outlook 2000-2007, WinXP-Vista environment.
