How to proxy for user hidden from the GAL in OWA

Office 365 2013 -Local AD Dirsync'd to Office 365, no local Exchange

We have user accounts for users who have left the company but whose mailboxes we don't want to delete yet so their supervisor can review them.  I want to change their mailbox to a shared account, give the supervisor access and remove them from the Global Address List so that other users in the company don't think that they still work here.

I can change the mailbox to a shared mailbox, delegate access of a user's account to a Supervisor in Exchange Online and hide the account from the address list.  If they are using the Outlook client, the user account will appear on the left side of the supervisor's Outlook client even though it is hidden from the GAL.

However, if the supervisor is using OWA, when they go to open the mail account for another user, there is no way for them to pick the 'hidden' user because OWA searches the GAL and they are not in the GAL.  Is there any way around this?

Hi Dan,

Base on my knowledge, hide a mailbox is designed to make it not appear in the GAL, however, you want that it show in the GAL, this is clearly contrary to the default design.

I don't think there is any way can achieve your requirement , except don't hide these mailboxes.
