How to make ActiveSync work
Dear Admin, Our goal is to enable ActiveSync on Windows Mobile phones from outside our LAN. Which conditions are necessary for this? 1. Do we have to install a new server with Edge Transport Role, and then place it in the DMZ? 2. Then configure the Client Access Server role to communicate with the Edge? 3. Do we have to purchase another full Exchange 2007 licence for this? Which steps are necessary to perfom this, and/or where can I find a detailed step by step documentation about this question? Our current All-in-One Exchange 2007 Server is on a Windows Server 2008 x86, and the new stand-alone server in the DMZ is Windows Server 2003 x64. Thank you in advance, Adam Toth

Our current All-in-One Exchange 2007 Server is on a Windows Server 2008 x86, and the new stand-alone server in the DMZ is Windows Server 2003 x64. The 32-bit version of Exchange 2007 is not supported for production environments. In production environments, you must install the 64-bit version of Exchange 2007.The 32-bit version is good for VM testing and labs, plus it is good to have in order to extract and install the Exchange Management Tools on 32-bit client operating systems. You should move your x64 server into you internal network, install Exchange with at least the mailbox, hub transport and client access role onto it. Move all mailboxes from your x86 server (and public folders). Remove your 32-bit Exchange version. By default ActiveSync will work (see Leif's links for more details). If you are security conscious, use your x86 server for ISA 2006, which requires Windows 2003, and that's the box you should place in your DMZ for publishing ActiveSync.
