How to let some users not receive email temporarily
Hi, guys I am using Exchang 2007 SP2, now I am asked to create some mailboxes and groups, but I don't want them to send or receive mails temporarily, if one day I want the users to use their mailboxes, then they can use it, how can I achieve this? Is there that function? Where to configure it? I ever wanted to use the Transport Rules with silently drop the message to achieve this, but I found I can't, I only don't want the message to be sent to the users I said above however they are in the To or CC field, but other people can receive it normally. Help me please. Thank you very much.

Do you want to deny them access to their mailbox completey, or just deny them the ability to send/receive messages? i.e. they can still access their calendar, tasks, etc.Neil Hobson, Exchange MVP

It is not important if they can access to their mailbox, but they must have no ability to send/receive messages. I don't want them to waste the space on the server before I let them use their mailbox. How can I achieve this? Thank you.

It might be better to disable all forms of client access (MAPI, OWA, POP, etc) from the EMC for those mailboxes and also whilst in EMC configure their message delivery restrictions setting so these mailbox reject messages from everyone.Neil Hobson, Exchange MVP

You could set their send/receive quotas below their current mailbox size until you're ready to turn them loose.

But if I configure them to reject messages from everyone, once other people send mail to them, the senders might receive the rejected message, I don't want this happen. I also have many email groups, and some of them include the people I don't want to receive mail, this is really troubling me. Is there any other better way or configuration to achieve this?

If so, the senders also will receive the rejected message.

If you're going to stop the recipeints from getting the email, then it's probably best that the senders know they're not getting it.

The senders may not know if the recipeints have ability to receive mails, and I must have created these mailboxes, that's what trouble me?

If you're adding them to distribution lists, the users can see the recipients on those lists. You can do what you're after by putting all those users into a DL, and using a transport rule to quietly drop any email to or from members of that DL, but it seems like bad practice.

First, thanks for your reply. I know that method and I have practised before, it worked when I choose "sent to people", but it didn't work when I choose "sent to a member of distribution list", and we have hundreds of users, it is really very hard to maintain if I choose this method. So, any other suggestion? Thank you.

I'd investigate why that rule isn't working. The only way I know of to selective suppress an NDR is with a transport rule. If that's your requirement you need to figure out how to get the rule set up to do that. I do much the same thing in my transport rules, and it works fine. I have about 5k users.

Try to think into this way. Mail_enabled_UserA - Not want to receive any new emailMail_enabled_UserB - Messaging Admin Not receive email: (You will not receive any bounce back email)1. Grant UserB Full Access permission to UserA.2. Setup a Outlook profile for UserA in UserB computer.3. Setup rule for UserA with "Delete All new arrival email".4. Hide UserA from Address List5. Remove Full Access permission for UserB in UserA Not allow user send email: (No one can access to mailbox, user cannot send email)1. Reset UserA to a random unknown password2. Disable AD account for UserA Resume it to normal:1. Enable AD account and assign password2. Open UserA Mailbox and remove "Delete All new arrival email" rule.
