How to hard code file extensions to open in Office 2013 apps on Windows 7
I have a Windows 7 PC we just upgrade from Office 2007 to Office 2013 C2R, but none of the default file extensions that should be opening in the Office apps aren't opening.  I've even tried an Open With and picked the Office15 versions of WinWord and stuff, but it won't accept them.   I tried a Quick Repair but that failed, even though all the apps still seem to work ok.  Is there a way to set them through the registry so they open in the right programs?

Hi,

Did you removed Office 2007 after installed Office 2013? According to your description, this issue might be caused by the file association broken. Please try to re-create the new file association:

Open regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.  Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.

For example:  Re-create Excel file association

  • Open Regedit (always backup your registry before making changes)
  • Navigate to HKLM - SOFTWARE - Clients - Spreadsheet - Microsoft Excel - Capabilities - FileAssociations
  • Add a new String value
  • Name = .show (or whatever file extension youre trying to associate)
  • Data = Excel.SLK

Reboot the computer to load the new registry values.
