How to get ORM support in Visio 2010?

Hi all,

I have recently bought a new computer, and upgraded almost my entire
software suite. One of many replacements is that I moved from Office
2003 to Office 2010. This includes the move from Visio 2003 for
Enterprise Architects to Visio 2010 - I did not find an Enterprise
Architects edition, so I chose the Premium edition, figuring that this
should include all options.

When I just tried to open an existing diagram, it opened all right,
but with a warning message: "No support for the ORM source model has
been installed" (not a direct quote; I translated from Dutch to
English).

Is support for ORM source model diagrams a seperate download? If so,
where do I fi

Hugo, starting with v2005 MS dropped support for the add-in that was used in the enterprise architect edition. The current database modeling is available in the visio professional version and above. It does not support forward engineering of databases. IMO if you want to see where MS is going you should be watching visual studio and how it works with entity framework. I think I saw a comment that a model could be created in it and moved to a ddl implementation.

Hi Al,

Thanks for your answer - I think. I don't use forward, nor reverse
modeling. But I do have some ORM diagrams that I want to be able to
open, edit, print, and save. Are you telling me that I need to dig up
my old install discs for the Enterprise Architect edition? Or is there
some way to add support for ORM diagrams to Visio

What edition of visio are you using?

Hi Al,

My edition is Microsoft Visio Premium 2010. Version 14.0.5128.5000
(32-bit), and running on Windows 7 64-bit.

I have an MSDN subscription, so I can install any other version if

The database model used within the enterprise edition was actually a separate add-in. It relied upon templates and code outside of visio which were supported by the development group (surprise). When you use those drawings and stencils they are calling modules where the support has been dropped (the vs people decided to go a different path). Where I know v2007 and v2010 can live together, I'm not sure how far back I'm willing to try and push the cohabitation issue.

When I need those previous products, I have a couple of virtual systems defined that I can take advantage of (I put v2002 and v2003 on a virtual xp system).

Hi Al,

Thanks for your reply. I guess I can just as well uninstall Visio
then, and install an old version instead (ORM diagrams is the only
thing I use Visio for).

One further question, out of interest. I understand ORM support has
not been fully dropped, but moved to Visual Studio - do you happen to
know if that support includes reading in an existing diagram

Hugo,

I don't believe that it supports reading a visio document as input.

Hi Hugo,

It's been a while since you asked this question, but maybe it helps someone else.

I've found the ORM stencil on the Microsoft downloads site (remove spaces):
