the confusion for me with that is NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM is shown as the "last logged on by" for numerous users. i imagine from the times listed, that's a part of the backup's running. is there a more definitive way to determine this?

Hi, This behavior does not indicate any issue that is related to system security. More information you can refer to KB816730 "Last Logged on By" value shows NTAUTHORITY\System or a cluster account http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816730/en-us Besides, you can try to use WMI to query LastLogonTime property. Below article show how to use VBscript to retrieve this lastlogon time properties.
