When numbering headings and appendices that can be used when adding chapter numbering to page numbers and captions the result is great but it is not 508 Compliant (using this approach: http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numberingappendixes.html).
The issue being that 508 Compliance requires the document structure to be consistent, i.e: after heading 3 you can either start a new chapter (heading 1) or continue down to heading 4 (without skipping levels). The approach above uses high level headings, for instance heading 7, to carry the function of chapter heading for an Appendix. That means we are skipping levels when it is time to start an appendix, for instance:
- Chapter 1 - heading 1
- 1.1 heading 2
- 1.1.1 heading 3
- Appendix A - heading 7
The above creates an issue in 508 Compliance because we skipped from outline level 3 to 7. Word does not allow for one to change the outline level for built in headings - so out heading 7 above will always be flagged as outline level 7.
To resolve that issue I created a new list style for Appendix headings only. Then created my paragraph styles and linked them to the appendix list style. Now "Appendix A" is a level 1 heading and we are 508 compliant. But another problem surfaces: we can't use the custom appendix numbering from my new heading styles when adding chapter numbering to page numbers and captions.
What's the work around to create appendix headings that can be used in chapter numbering and 508 compliant at the same time?
