Which version are you used? Apple Mail or Outlook for Mac?
Apple Mail the client that comes with OSX supports standard protocols (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), these are all supported by Exchange server. However, OS X Snow Leopard and later support Exchange Web Services (EWS) as a connection to Exchange server. More details

If you have Outlook Anywhere working correctly from outside for PC users, then the Mac should pick it up from Autodiscover and connect. Please refer to below link to double check
