How to Repair Large Outlook 2007 PST on Windows 7
User running Windows 7, with Outlook 2007, 20 GB PST.
User has two email account, 1 may be an IMAP, 1 may be POP, or both can be POP (I'll check if necessary)
No Exchange accounts.

Outlook wouldn't start, so I used SCANPST to repair (took hours, of course). Outlook ran slowly, but now is getting stuck again.

Ran Windows 7 Error-checking, with "Scan For and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

My thought was to:
Restart with startup items turned off.
Upgrade to Office 2013
See if Outlook will open the PST
Run SCANPST again

Does SCANPST compact the PST ?
Should I compact after running SCANPST ?

If I get Outlook Running, should I move old messages to separate PST files, a year at a time?

Any 3rd party repair tools that I can use?

Thanks.

Hello,

No, "scanpst.exe (Inbox Repair Tool)" does not compact the PST File. SCANPST checks the file directory structure and file headers (low level objects) for corruptions and tries to repair the file. But it does not repair highly corrupted Outlook PST Files. On the other hand,Compact Now" feature that is inbuilt in Microsoft Outlook reduces only white spaces and it can work or compact only healthy Outlook PST File. So, you should run SCANPST again (if you are thinking to do so) and can import PST File into Outlook (after compressing the data file). If the PST File still remains corrupted, then you need to move on any third party utility. I had the same problem in the past, but my friend suggests me a reliable & efficient PST Repair Tool. When I used its demo version, it really worked great. So I would like to suggest you this tool on behalf of my personal experience.

hello ,

your problem will not going to solved using outlook inbuilt utility scanpst.exe as it can only handle minor corruption issue and you may face data loss because of deletion of bad header files. I suggest you to use Synchronization filter method  to reduce the size of PST file and then follow compact Now this will surely reduce the size at some extent. To know more about the procedure refer this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/932086

Hi,

I think Kelvin has explained things pretty well.

I have one more thing to suggest in your scenario, that is please don't keep too much in a single .pst file. I've seen large .pst files that cause Outlook to perform quite slow. So "a year at a time" is a good choice to keep the .pst files in a proper size.

NO, scanpst.exe never do such compact or compress operations, if you are unable then using third party tool you can repair and then compact or split your large pst file to smaller pst file.

For the recovery of Outlook pst file use Kernel for Outlook PST Repair Tool from http://www.nucleustechnologies.com/Microsoft-Outlook-Mail-Recovery.html

hello,

If the method that i have suggested above is not working for you or your pst file got severely damaged, than there is only one way to get overcome with this situation is to use Recover outlook software. I found this software is more efficient and reliable for repairing corrupt PST file. This software also reduce the size of large pst file significantly.
