How to Install Exchange 2010 coexisting with Exchange 2013

Hi!

I need to restore an exchange 2010 database that was backed up with Arcserve Exchange Backup Agent.

We dont have exchange 2010 anymore, only Exchange 2013.

Arcserve Exchange Agent doesnt support restoring exchange 2010 database into exchange 2013 server.

They proposed me to install a separated environment, with active directory with the same domain name and exchange 2010 mbx server, to proceed with this restore, sou I can connect and extract pst from the database.

If I knew that before migration to exchange 2013, I would not have uninstalled exchange 2010 mbx server.

Why I cannot reinstall Exchange 2010 now, in coexistence with Exchange 2013?

Thanks in advance.

Once you have removed the last Exchange 2010 server in most cases you cannot then install a fresh server of that version - you can only go up. The main reason for that is the domain and forest prep tools actually run in different ways depending on whether there are older versions of Exchange present or not - if there are, then they will run additional commands.

The only way that you might be able to install Exchange 2010 in the live domain is if you have done no patching of Exchange 2013 at all - so the domain is as it was when Exchange 2010 was removed.

However the proposed solution is the best course of action. Just ensure everything is as close to identical as possible - same Exchange org name, server name etc.
