Hi,

It is said that will be very complicated to do so in the following thread:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/visiogeneral/thread/0f1fc88c-5049-44c7-8c4b-15caab23b430

How about create stencils in your "Favorites" with the fonts you like and just keep using those.

Sincerely,
Max Meng

Thanks Max.. Maybe someone can let the boy's and girls know at the Visio team know,  It would sure be nice

to have a basic config to set some things like font and so-forth. Again Thanks for taking the time to answer

my question.

There is a slightly more "simple" way to make this change, assuming that you have the Administrator privileges on your computer. Here are the steps:

  1. If you have Visio open, close all files/documents in it (you may leave it open).
  2. Find the "Visio Content" folder on your computer. (On my computer it was in the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Visio Content.)
  3. Right click on the "1033" folder and select Properties. Go to the "Security" tab of the Properties popup and select the "Edit..." button
  4. Find the "Users" line in the Group or user names section at the top and select it. Then select the "Add..." button.
  5. Another popup appears. Select the checkbox under "Allow" for the line item labeled "Full control". Select OK.
  6. You should now be at the Properties popup. Select the General tab and clear the checkbox for Read-Only. Select OK and Yes to apply the change to all files and sub-folders.
  7. Leave that Windows Explorer window open (we'll come back to it later)
  8. Return to Visio and select Open from the File ribbon. In the Open dialog, in the dropdown next to the Filename box change the value from All Visio files to "Stencil".
  9. Navigate to the same folder in step #2, above
  10. Now you'll have to find the stencil you want to change the shape properties for. Every template has 2 stencils one for Metric (file name ends with "_M") and US Standard (file name ends with "_U"). Most of the names you'll be able to guess from their UI-presented versions: "BASFLO_M" for Basic Flowchart - Metric, for example. Highlight the one you want to change then then select the Open button.
  11. Now here's the REALLY annoying part (I know, you're 11 steps in and I'm JUST NOW saying it's going to get annoying): there's no way to globally change the properties of all the shapes in a stencil. Instead you're going to have to right-click on each shape one at a time and select the nested context menu item: Edit Master -->Edit Master Shape.
  12. A page will appear with just that one shape on it. Select the shape with a left mouse click and then change the properties however you like (font, point size, color, fill, etc.), but DON'T click on the Save button unless you want to get angry (it won't work).
  13. Instead click on the page close "X" (NOT the one for Visio overall). Then click on "Yes" for the prompt to update the shape.
  14. Repeat steps 11-13 for each of the shapes in the stencil that you want to change. NOTE: You have NOT saved the stencil yet (that's the next step).
  15. Now click on the "X" to close the stencil (tall/narrow window on the left) and "Yes" for the prompt to save the stencil.  You can stop here if you want to. However, I recommend continuing to the next step.
  16. Return to your Windows Explorer session with the "Visio Content" folder opened. Right click on "1033" again and on the General tab select the Read-Only checkbox so that it is checked (that may require 2 clicks). Select OK
  17. NOW you're done and your templates are "safe" from accidental update

Will someone please ask the Vista team to stay away from Visio; it used to be quite useful.

Tim's 17 step process is great except that "Edit Master" is grey-out for me, even though I Admin perms on my computer.  What's up with that?

Create a custom theme and then apply it to your Visio file.

You do that via the Design tab. The default font option is under "Effects". Create a custom Theme Effects and set the default font there.
