How does Office2013 & Office365 Dictionary language/location determines what language to use for spell check

I need to get my head around this and have a clearer picture for my manager to have an understanding on how the langauge and dictionary work in office2013/ office365

We have an office in US, one of the question i have been asked was weather the version of office i downloaded is in US or UK English and i was like as far as i  know click to run can only be downloaded in en-us and the second question was how would the dictionary work if its in us English only and i wasn't sure about this one

As far as i think the proofing concept relies on keyboard input language and checks for spelling and grammar using the keyboard language but i am not 100% certain on it

Could someone please explain the proofing concept, dictionaries and how they work in office2013 and if there is an option for uk English in dictionary or if the it can be downloaded using deployment tool & click to run XML file

Hi fzameen,

According to your description, there are 2 questions you wonder to solve. Question 1, you wonder to know which language pack are installed in your Office. Question 2, you wonder to how the language for spelling check in Office work. Is my understanding correct?

Microsoft Office uses the default input language in the Windows operating system to determine the default language for Office programs. To change the default language in Office programs, you must change the default input language for the Windows operating system, and then change the default editing language for Office.

So you need to check the default input language in Windows first.

In Windows 8:

  1. In the Charms bar, search Apps for Control Panel.
  2. Click Change input methods under Clock, Language, and Region.
  3. Click Add language to add a new language.
  4. Or click Options for a language you already have installed, and then click Add an input method.

In Windows 7:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Under Clock, Language, and Region, under Region and Language, click Change keyboards or other input methods.
  3. In the Region and Language dialog box, on the Keyboards and Languages tab, click Change keyboards.
  4. In the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, under Default input language, click the language that you want to use as the default language, and then go to set the default editing language in Office.
    • If the language that you want to use as the default input language is not listed, complete Steps 5 through 8.
  5. Under Installed services, click Add.
  6. Expand the language that you want to use as the default input language, and then expand Keyboard.
  7. Select the check box for the keyboard or Input Method Editor (IME) that you want to use, and then click OK. The language is added to the Default input language list.
    • To preview the keyboard layout, click Preview.
  8. Under Default input language, click the language that you want to use as the default language.

Now for question 1, to check the language pack in your Office. Please try these steps

  1. Open an Office application, like Word.
  2. Click File > Options > Language.
  3. In the Set the Office Language Preferences dialog box, in the Proofing (Spelling, Grammar) list, if you see the Spelling & Grammar icon next to the language you want, then that language pack is installed.

Firstly thanks very much for taking time out in replying to my question in so much detail. You have pretty much covered what i was after.

I wasn't certain of weather the proofing uses the input language or has its own additional language pack and wanted to know it from another person for the confirmation

2nd question was more to do with the deployment tool XML weather there is an option for any other English apart from en-us (uk english) perhaps when downloading the office365 package using the /download switch

It doesn't seem that there is another English apart from en-us which is the Office365 default ?
