How do I remove user from group email list?
The exchange admin is away, and Im the "other" IT guy. I dont normally deal with Exchange. I have been asked to disable someones account. We use Active Directories (server 2003) and Exchange 2003. I have disabled their account in AD. I have also clicked the little box to "Hide from Exchange Address list" E.G. R.Click on User in AD. Select Properties. Choose "Exchange Advanced" Tab Check "Hide from Exchange Address lists". However, in the past we have set up a group mailing list so that when you sent an email to "Allist" then email is sent to everyone in the address book. When we now send mail to this user eg "Allist" all the users get the mail but we also get a bounced message saying. The message reached the recipient's e-mail system, but delivery was refused. Attempt to resend the message. If it still fails, contact your system administrator. The bounced message is coming from the disabled account. There must be somewhere else that I have to remove this person from to fully remove them. Can anyone tell me where this is or where I should look. thank.

Hi, You should be able to find this distribution group in active directory users and computers and be able to remove the user from the group here. Leif

Hi, * Are you able to see the user account(disabled) in the Distribution list? If yes, then you could remove his account from that DL. * Whether you removed the user account from that DL and the sent the mail immediately? Bcoz there should be some time for replication.. If not, then some one in that DL has set delegate to that disabled account. You need to find the person and remove the delegate. -Muralidharan.

you may want to go ahead & remove this users exchange attributes, but remeber when you do this the mailbox will be disconnected & will be deleted after 30 days ( Default Setting, unless that was further customized)

You can always go into their AD account and choose the Member Of tab and remove that distribution group from it.

Thanks. You seem to have hit the nail on the head. I found the group in users. Opened it up and removed the already disabled user. By the ay if you still there I see another group called a Query based distribution group this too has all our users in it. But when I look at it it still lists the old user I just removed. I cant right click to remove them, but there is a start button on it. What is this ?? (if you know) Thanks again

Hi, A query based distribution group is a group that is created by searching AD for users having a specific value in one of the fields (company. office, custrom attribute or ). To remove the user from this group you need to find which value the group searches for and then removce this value from the user object. Leif
