How do I export a mailbox from a 2003 RSG to a PST without using ExMerge?
We have migrated all of our users over to an Exchange 2010
environment, but kept a 2003 server around for legacy restores. Today
I received a couple of requests to restore emails from the old 2003
environment. I have recovered the database, and see the information
that I am looking for, but I am unable to pull the information from
the Recovery Storage Group. I keep getting an error when using ExMerge
pointing to the fact that the user is no longer on the mailbox
database where the backup was taken from. Is there a way to pull the
user's mailbox from the RSG database to a PST without have to either
move the user back to the old server or use ExMerge?

Use Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp since it can do what you need and more and also does not use RSG, just point DS to the raw EDB files and you can then open the offline
Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 or 5.5 database so that you can browse, search, view, export to PST, MSG & XML or recover data direct to any production Exchange server. Troy Werelius

I've been in that situation with a deleted/restored account where the new GUID didn't match the old mailbox data. If you havent already invested in the solution Troy mentioned (which sounds like a useful tool to have anyway), it IS possible to "fool" Exchange
into using the RSG database as a normal user database. Assuming you have the RSG created, try this:
1. Dismount the database inside the RSG that you created.
2. Create a new Storage group
3. Create a new database inside of the SG you just created. Make sure to use the
SAME NAME as the database you’re restoring (important).
This step is crucial, as Exchange will automatically create new .edb and .stm files for you unless you provide
them (coming in the next steps).Take note of the location of the edb and stm files that Exchange will be using
for the database and ensure that location has adequate space for the database files:
Note: You can’t direct Exchange to the existing database files. You have to wait until the database is created.
4. Copy the files that the RSG was using into the location that you noted above.
5. Go to the properties of the new database and ensure that “This Database can be
overwritten by a restore” option is checked.
6. Mount the database, and run the Cleanup Agent.
(When you first restore, the database will still assume all the mailboxes are connected – running the cleanup
agent will force them to show as disconnected.)
7. Find the mailbox that you want to restore, connect it to a test or recreated account
and export the mailbox wherever you want.
