How can I create a user account in domain A to use a mailbox in a mail server in domain B?
Hi, I recently setup a new domain (e.g domainB.local) which is in the same forest as a existing domain (e.g domainA.local). There is a exchange 2003 server in domainA.local. I would like to use this exchange server (exchange2003.domainA.local) to host all mailboxes and all other mail functionalities for the new domainB.local with an email address of domainB.com. So when people sending emails to e.g., user1(at)domainB.com, exchange2003.domainA.local will process this mail and store it to user1's mailbox which is sitting in the database of exchange2003.domainA.local. Same for outgoing emails. How can I achieve this? Many thanks!

What is challange you are facing. Its pretty acceptable solution for lots of company. Only you need to run /domainprep in new domain and then create mailbox in Exchange domain. Hi, Can you explain a bit more detail? so i just need to run the exchange domain prep on the new domain with the new domain administrator credential and everything will be done? I mean after the domain prep, i can setup a user in the new domain with a mailbox on an exchange server in another domain normally using the AD users and computers tool? Also, if the link provided by Rajkumar is not correct for me, can you point me somewhere with the correct info? Many thanks.

Hi Nairdaism, Sure, you could run the domain prep in the new domain, and the user account could have the exchange features/properties. And you could creat a mailbox for the account through ADUC and set the malbox hosted on the exchange server in the domain A. Regards! Hi I just run the domain prep on the new domain. I then go to the exchange server in the old domain and open the ADUC and connect to the new domain, so i create the user as usual and select to use the mailbox in the old domain's exchange server. At first there were no any smtp address, so i added one end with the new domain (e.g. user1@domainB.com). There are no any error until this. I then use this user logon to a client PC in the new domain and setup outlook, and i got an error "The name could not be matched to a name in the address list" what should i do now? thanks.

Hi Nairdaism. If the mailbox was created, the email address would appear after a certain period of time. Because the the RUS would update in a period of time. You can not manually configure the email address. There is no smtp address for DomainB.com, so the operation is wrong. If you want to add a new accept domain, you could use the recipient to policy add a new one for domainB. Regards! Hi Gavin, below is what i have done: 1> run the exchange domainprep on the new domain 2> setup RUS so the new domain have a exchange server (in old domain) to look after 3> setup recipient policy to add the new domain (@newdomain.com). However, this is not the same as the AD domain name (newdomain.local) 4> created an user and manually added a SMTP address (user1@newdomain.com) and assigned to use the exchange server in the old domain to host mailbox and email transport. i still can't get it working. Would you mind telling me in detail how to setup this from the begining? many thanks.

Test first with OWA for some mailbox, If still you are not able to access it then rebuild RUS (right click RUS ans rebuild) then reboot DC in child domain.Anil MCC 2011,ITIL V3,MCSA 2003,MCTS 2010, My Blog : http://messagingschool.wordpress.com

Tested OWA also failed to connect. Also, still the same after rebuild RUS and reboot DC in child domain. I have also setup a recipient policy so exchange can start handle the new domain SMTP address (@newdomain.com) However, I am not sure what should i put in to the filter rules in the general page. what filter will work for this situation? thanks.

In ADUC, go into the properties of a user in the working domain then security tab. There should be some Exchange groups listed. Switch to the new domain and go into the properties of a user security tab, is the Exchange groups listed as well? the issue has been resolved by MS support call. we have to use adsiedit to raise the priority of the RUS and also other stuff to get it setup.
