How can I access Archived emails in public DLs through a web service

We are trying to extract popular topics that our audience is discussing on specific named publicly accessible DLs.

We would like to go back 6 months to scan for potential popular topics

We want to be able to do this programmatically through a web API and a running web service

Anyone done this before? can you share?

Can you please explain further, i.e. are you looking to see how many times a Distribution List is being used or??
