How Autodiscover works?
I'm studying for the 70-662 exam and so far, none of the reading materials, including the MS Press books, goes indepth about Autodiscover. The only thing mentioned is that Autodiscover helps configure Outlook automatically. I was hoping someone could tell me how it works. From what I gathered on Technet, When an Outlook client connects, it query AD for the SCP object, the SCP object return the Autodiscover URL. The client then connect to the URL and retrieve the URL for the other service. Is that right? If so, I have a few questions: 1) If I have multiple CAS servers, can I specify which SCP object is retrieved/which Autodiscover URL is returned to the client? 2) Once connected to the Autodiscover service, the url returned for other services (OWA, OAB, etc..) are configured on the indvidual service, right?

How about this? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332063(EXCHG.80).aspx >From what I gathered on Technet, > >When an Outlook client connects, it query AD for the SCP object, the SCP object return the Autodiscover URL. For external users it's DNS. > If so, I have a few questions: >1) If I have multiple CAS servers, can I specify which SCP object is retrieved/which Autodiscover URL is returned to the client? Only based on the AD site, not the individual user. >2) Once connected to the Autodiscover service, the url returned for other services (OWA, OAB, etc..) are configured on the indvidual service, right? (1) Yes. For more information see BradHugh's WebLog: AutodiscoverSiteScope and Client-only sites http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brad_hughes/archive/2007/09/11/autodiscoversitescope-and-client-only-sites.aspx (2) Yes. There is a highly interesting discussion of Autodiscover in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Best Practices, an outstanding good book, covering things which at least I have not seen anywhere else: Deploying a static XML file with the PreferLocalXML registry value and other Autodiscover order registry settings, plus a way to suppress the Autodiscover redirect dialog box (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956528).
