Hiding the Global Address List in Exchange 2003
Hello All, I'm using Small Business Server 2003 SP3 with Exchange 2003. I have a domain setup and only a dozen users setup and connected to it that all use Outlook 2003. I would like to know if there is anyway I can hide the Global Address List from being pulled up in the Address Book either on Exchange or Outlook 2003 client. I have tried setting the permissions for the System Manager > All Global Address List > Default Global Address List to deny everything towards a single user account and it worked for the seperate Address List's but the Global Address List still appeared. Any ideas? Thanks, Andre

I think that Outlook as to have visibility to at least on Global Address List. You could probably futz around with it and finally block acess to it, but I recommend that you don't. Outlook has to be able to resolve Exchange recipient information. Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

If you only have 12 people, why dont you hide everyone's address from the address book? Click on the User Object and go to properties, I don't recall which tab, possibly Exchange General or Advanced, there is a box to check to say hide from address book. Once RUS runs again it will hide that user. Hiding all users would basically do the same thing you are looking for correct?Mark Morowczynski|MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Hello Mark, Thank you for the response, and yes that would have been my second route but I want to see if there is a way to actually hide the name "Global Address List" from the address book while still having Exchange on their Outlook accounts. If not that, do you know if it would be possible to have another list come up defaulted when you first pull up the Address Book instead of the Global Address List. What I am trying to accomplish is to have these twelve or so employees use their POP3/SMTP ISP for their mailboxes, but have Exchange capabilities to use shared Calender and Contact items. I debated over having them use the Global Address List but due to economic reason's they would rather use a Shared Contacts folder (Public Folder) instead since it would be easier for them to manage and keep track of rather than hiring us to administer their Active Directory for the GAL. So what I would like to do then because of that is just have them use that same Shared Contacts Public Folder in the Address Book and just use Active Directory for domain accounts, security groups, etc.

Public Folders are being retired in future versions of Exchange just for a heads up. Did you make a decision on this? Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

You can create a new Global Address List that these users have permission to, and deny them permission to the Default Global Address List. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312287/

I think we came up with multiple ways to solve this problem ;)Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com
