Hidden mailboxes and Direct Reports; Hidden nested groups
Two questions:
Why do hidden mailboxes appear in Direct Reports on the organization tab in the Outlook Address Book (2007 or OWA)?
Why do hidden nested groups appear as members in their parent groups?

Hi JDAChris,
Why do hidden mailboxes appear in Direct Reports on the organization tab in the Outlook Address Book (2007 or OWA)?
Per my knowledge, a hidden mailbox is the attribute
msExchHideFromAddressLists is set to a value of
TRUE, it will not change the attribute
manager.
When you have sat manager for the hidden mailboxes, it will add a value to his manager’s
directReports attribute, and this attribute is help to list users in Direct Report. If you
don’t change the attribute manager, it will not affect hidden mailboxes appear in Direct
Reports on the organization tab.
Why do hidden nested groups appear as members in their parent groups?
This is similar as your first problem, when you hide the nested groups, only the attribute
msExchHideFromAddressLists
is set to value of
TRUE, it will not change the attribute
memberof.
When you add hidden group to a parent group, it will add a value to parent group
member attribute, this attribute is help to list members of parent group, so if you don’t
change the attribute memberof, it will not affect hidden nested groups appear as members in
their parent group.
You can check all these attributes in ADSI Edit.
Thanks,
Evan

Evan,
Thank you for your response. I'll mark this as an answer with the following statments.
I understand the need for different attributes in the schema to manage this information. However, I find it illogical that a mailbox or group that is hidden from address lists still shows up, in whole or in part, in the address list. The Direct
Reports information for a mailbox, and Members for a group, are parts of the address list.
Exchange Team: I think we have a feature request! It would be great if hidden objects were COMPLETELY hidden from Exchange address lists (without having to manipulate other attributes - one click to hide, or one PowerShell command to hide, and
truly hide, the objects).
Thanks again!
