Help please! Change reply to: address in Exchange 2003 but.....
Scenario:Two companies, two networks, totally disconnected. One user works at both companies.I want to change the reply to address for user on an Exchange 2003 server.User wants reply address to reflect the address of that of company b. Exchange server is hosted with company A.Now, if I go into exchange server in company A, create an addtional address reflecting what he wants, then make it his primary, will that change his reply to? Will that affect anything else? The kicker. He wants his reply to to be that of his email address with company b. so if someone sends him an email to the new address, will it go to both companies and both domains. Will it get lost? Will all mail just go to his exchange account with company a? Any help would be appreciated.Thank youmcp

Yes it will change his reply to for all emails he sends out.The replies will not go to both companies unless you're doing some sort of SMTP namespace sharing between both orgs.James Chong (MVP) MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Ok. so what if his email at company a is originally mike@widgets.com and his email at company b is mike@homes.com? Then we add a new email for him in company a and make it primary and call it mike@homes.com which is the same thing he is at company b. What happens if someone outside of both domains, say with a hotmail account generates a new email to mike@homes.com What happens? mcp

Hi rMiles05, To receive mails from External Domain, he should have a single SMTP namespace. which company's name is wants to use to receive mails? does he have mailboxes on both locations or just a forwarder comp B to Comp A? which mailbox does he use primarily? depending on the situation we can use contacts, forwarders etc. Thanks.Vishal Ramnani | MCITP - Exchange 2007 | MCSE Messaging

he has an account on one mail system in one domain (Exchange and BES)he has another account on another mail system in another totally disconnected domain (Lotus Notes)He has a rule setup in company b to forward all his incoming mail to company a. He created the rule via his client. He mostly uses company b. However, by the end of the year, all systems will be integrated and company b willabsorbed company a.Does that answer the question above?mcp

Yes. Thank you. answers to your questions below... Now, if I go into exchange server in company A, create an addtional address reflecting what he wants, then make it his primary, will that change his reply to? Will that affect anything else? it will not change anything as it will mark all outgoig mails from this mailbox (Comp A) with the primary address of CopmB which you added. when someone reply to that mail. it should be delivered to CompB. as CombB MX records will be there on internet. The kicker. He wants his reply to to be that of his email address with company b. so if someone sends him an email to the new address, will it go to both companies and both domains. Will it get lost? Will all mail just go to his exchange account with company a? Any help would be appreciated. if someone sends a mail to his newly added address(compB address on compA mailbox), it will be delivered to CompB domain as while sending mails sender will check the autorative MX records for address so it should go CompB domain. Hi,VishalRamnani is right. SincetheMX record for thecompany Bis on the Internet, the email to the user with the primary address of company B will be delivered into Company B, then forward it into Company A by using the rule.ThanksAllen
