Help creating accounts using Adminpak
This may be easy for someone to answer. I installed Adminpak for Server 2003 so that I can create user accounts from my desktop. For some reason it keeps creating the accounts on our backup domain controller instead of our primary domain controller. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it seems to retain my settings from the first installation.

Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 have no notion of Primary and Backup domain controllers. All Domain controllers are writeable and this is a good thing. ADUC connects to the DC that is closest to you, you can manually connect ADUCto a specific domain controller if you want, but there is no need to do that, replication will occure and DCs will be in sync every 5 mins in site and every 15 mins between sites by default You could however start ADUC and set a fix DC but then you don't have any resilience if your specific server dies! dsa.msc /server=dc-01.domain.com http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;214676 (There is a special role PDC but this is only for some functions like time sync and password change mechanisms) Deli

Thanks for the reply but I guess I should have been more clear on what my actual issue is. When we have a new account to create we go into the Adminpak and create the account on the PDC. During this process, after setting up the Network login "stuff" it asks if we want to create an exchange account. That's where I have the problem. It never asks me that. We think it's because the Adminpak that is setup on my desktop is creating accounts on the BDC instead of the PDC. Is this the case? My coworker, who is currently setting up the accounts, has no issues and the we think the only difference is he is creating accounts on the PDC and I am creating them on the BDC. Maybe it's a rights issue. He is the domain admin and I am in the Account Operators group. Maybe that is sufficient rights to create accounts on the exchange server???

No you got it all wrong. It does not matter on which DC you create accounts or mailboxes. And there is no such thing anymore as PDC and BDC, those were the old days of NT 4.0now you have all writeable DCs. But your problem is that on your machine you don't have Exchange System Manager installed. So Install Exchange System Manager only on your desktop (Admin pack needs to be present first) Now you will see that the create user wizard will show U the exchange stuff! Deli
