Having another smtp gateway server and forwarding emails to an all-in-one box with Exchange 2007? howto?
Sorry if this may be a basic question.. but.. We are considering throwing our Brightmail 6.5 product on another server and adding an SMTP service to it (essentially becoming an "almost" edge server).. this is necessary because Brightmail will not work on the same box with Exchange 2007.. and I'm having trouble finding a solution which will work on the same box as Exchange 2007 and offer keyword filtering for both allow/blocking of spam... Do I simply install the smtp service on this 2nd server.. then which settings should be applied on the 2007 box to ensure it receives email from that smtp service (and/or settings on the 2nd box to send emails to the 2007 box).. I'm assuming it should be fairly simple to configure, but wanted to double check...

You don't really need an EDGE server in the Exchange 2007 environment. You can also install Antispam agents on the HUB server. How to Enable Anti-Spam Functionality on a Hub Transport Server http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201691.aspx Hope this helps

If you are happy with Brightmail, how about Symantec's SMTP Gateway with Brightmail? I used it at my last place, and it worked great. Symantec owns Brightmail now.

I've already installed the anti-spam agents.. but they aren't very effective for our organization, alot gets through and many machines the junk-email folder doesnt end up with the spam at the set level I have it at. (they all goto their inboxes on some)

Your referring to a router/firewall/gateway vpn I assume? We use a Symantec Gateway 4xx series .. it doesnt have the antispam built in.. frankly, given how poorly the unit functions, i'm not sure i'd buy another. We have to reboot the router at least 1x or 2x a week, as it suddenly locks up for no reason, internet access goes down, you cant even ping the router if on the inside.. if you happen to be on the outside, then i can still access it via the domain name and port.. i then set it to reboot and suddenly all is fine.. quite frustrating, never did find a solution and their support only lasts (free) for 90 days.
