HTML inputs (checkbox, dropdown, etc.) showing as red X in Word

A few days ago I started having problems displaying HTML checkboxes in MS Word. A checkbox would appear as a red X. The same happens to dropdowns.

For example, this basic HTML document would display a red X when opened in Word:

<html>

<head><title></title></head>

<body>

  <input type="checkbox"/>

</body>

</html>

This used to display a checkbox. In fact, I have a machine with Word 2007 on which it works. But my machines with Word 2010 and 2013 all show a red X.

Any help would be appreciated in figuring out why Word can no longer display HTML checkboxes and dropdowns as of a few days ago.

Thank you.

Hi,

Actually I can make this display in my Word 2010 and Word 2013. Please check this setting in Word:

File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> ActiveX Settings -> I can confirm if "Disable all controls without notification" is selected, the checkbox won't display. Try "Enable all controls without restrictions and without prompting" or "Prompt me before enabling all controls with minimal restrictions" to check the result.

You may need to restart Word to see the difference.
