Similar thing hapened to me. While installing SP1, all the prerequistes were met, but then I got a message saying that the install had failed and a reboot was required and that I should run setup again. After rebooting, I found my exchange files were gone and now I can't run setup because it says a backup registry setting is found and only build to build upgrade is supported. Fortunately this is not in production....

Hi there I have the same issue. I also tried the suggestion of deleting the server from the schema using ADSIEDIT (under the configuration section) and that didn't work either If anyone has a clue please write in ASAP as it botched up my production server and if nothing else comes up I will have to rebuild from scratch

Hope this helps people - sorry it took so long to reply. I solved this issue via a rebuild of the server (which was much easier than I expected - read on). It was a production server and took about 2 days to build. Now that I know what has to be done. I could probably get the server up in less than 5 hours - i.e. receiving\sending new emails to all mailboxes. After that it's a full email restore (all emails prior to rebuild). My network setup is 1 DC and 1 Exchange 2007 server (which is not a DC) - pretty simple. On the Exchange server I reinstalled Windows 2003 R2 with all service packs then joined the domain with same server name. I then installed Exchange 2007 (with the integrated SP1) - of course I did all the pre-exchange install configuration (IIS etc). Because the DC was still intact with the Exchange 2007 schema, the new Exchange installed had all it's settings. YES ALL ITS SETTINGS including mailboxes, authorized domains etc. I think the most important step is using the SAME SERVER NAME! Here's the tricky bit, well not really. The mailboxes won't mount\connect to the newExchange mail store. So here's what you do. Disable all the mailboxes (DO NOT DELETE, just disable them which only removes the users Exhange attributes - deleting will remove the AD account as well. Then re-add the mailboxes (same as adding a new mailbox). Do this for everyone. This basically gets all users up to the point of receiving new emails and ability to send emails as well. When the user's Outlook client is started, it will come up with two options (Temporary Mailbox or User Old Data) - something along those lines. Old data is all the old emails, when Outlook was last sync to the old exchange server before it died (.ost file). And temporary mailboxis basically the link to the newly installed exchange server - it's only available in online mode(No cache exchange mode). So basically users can toggle between new and old emails by closing down Outlook and restarting it and select between the two options. The fastest way to restore the old emails is via your backup. We use backup exec so we restored all the emails into the users mailboxes,in the background with one restore job. We did this during office hours and it didn't really slow down the server or the network (45 users on 100Mb switch, 50GB of emails - using LTO3 tape\drive - 4 hours). When the users mailbox is fully restored with old emails we changed the users Outlook profile (basically just created a new profile). Outlook can be set for cache exchange mode and a copy of users emails downloads onto their PC, as per normal. If you need more info, just email me. Happy to help as this was a huge nightmare for me and I din't wish this upon anyone.

The following worked for me: Set the World Wide Web Publishing Service, IIS Admin Service, and HTTP SSL service to automatic and started (they were disabled). This may not be needed based upon which server roles you are updating. Copy file ExchHelp.chm from \setup\serverroles\common of the setup media into the \Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin directory Re-run Setup.com /mode:upgrade
