Grant domain users without mailboxes access to public folders
Hello, We currently run Exchange 2007, and have a fairly widely used public folder repository. We also have many users that have domain accounts but do not have mailboxes on Exchange. We do not want to give them mailboxes, but we would like them to be able to have read access to the exchange public folders. This also needs to be possible from browsers other than Internet Explorer (Firefox, Safari, etc.). We have no interest inmigrating our public folders to Sharepoint, nor do we want to give them Exchange mailboxes, so neither option is an acceptable solution.. This was possible in exchange 2003, but doesn't seem possible in 2007. How do I give domain users access to Public folders? If there is no way to grant them access, is there a way to automatically synchronize or otherwise publish public folders to a web page? Thanks Christiaan

Your only option is OWA, and that requires mail enabled user accounts. If they only need read access, then create a single user account and get them to all login with that. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

True, it used to work in 2003 when you were able to create non mapi PF trees, but I don't think there is any other way with 2007 anymore.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

OWA 2007 does not support public folder browsing unless you are using IE. I need a solution that is platform and browser independent

Your options are limited if you want to keep public folders. EWS might be one way, but you would have to get someone to write something for you. I am not aware of any third party interfaces for Public Folders that have already been written to use EWS. The other option is Exchange 2010, which has much better cross platform support for OWA access. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Hi, For managing public folder in GUI, it is not by design in Exchange server 2007, instead, it is achieved by powershell so Exchange administrator need to be familiar with scripts. Now the function of public folder more depends on web service. As Sembee said, Exchange server 2010 is a good choice. For the application of public folder in Exchange server 2010, you can refer to the article ‘Understand Public Folders’: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397221.aspx Hope it helps.
