Global Catalog on an RODC

Hello there,

I am new to Exchange and have read somewhere that no version of Exchange will support Global catalog on an RODC. I was under the impression that as long as the Global Catalog is updated via constant synchronization Exchange can function around it? Can someone please clarify for me.

I appreciate your feedback.

Exchange server need constant write access to AD. For example, when you create a mailbox, Exchange modify the underlying user object in AD. A RODC is not writeable hence cannot be used by Exchange server.

To add, you should not have RODCs in the same site as your Exchange server.

Hi,

As a correction, if you are running Microsoft Exchange Server, locate your Exchange servers in hub sites and data centers with writeable domain controllers. Exchange Server does not use RODCs. This means that if an RODC and a computer running Exchange Server are running in the same site, the computer running Exchange Server disregards the RODC and attempts to contact a writeable domain controller.

However, we can configure Outlook clients in a branch office that is serviced by a read-only global catalog server to use the read-only global catalog server for global address book lookups.
