Global Address List won't update names changes on Outlook / Exchange 2008
For same reason , I noted that GAL is not updating name changes not even after I update the address book manually on outlook 2007/ or 2003. Selecting users from the address book tab, will show the right names updated or if we access email on https will also show names properly updates. I tried updating the OAB on the Organization Configuration tab on the server ( exchange 2007) but not luck. I even restart the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution Service but same results. (setup to automatic). NO error or event logs related. I tried the update command on the exchange management shell : Update-GlobalAddressList -Identity <GlobalAddressListIdParameter> -DomainController but not sure how to use it right , what should go under Identity ? Any one have any tips or idea what else should I check ? Anything will be greatily apprecciated. Thanks Team Cesar.

Since it shows correct update in OWA it looks like OAB problem, let me give you the sequence to verify... Update the GAL with command as you wrote... Get-GlobalAddressList | Update-GlobalAddressList Update OAB with below cmdlet and Restart the File Distribution Service since Outlook 2007 users get OAB update every 8 hours by default but restarting this service make it forceful. Get-OfflineAddressBook | Update-OfflineAddressBook Now it's time of outlook to download OAB changes from server. Follow below procedure on workstation... Outlook 2003/2007 -> Tools -> Send/Receive -> Download Address Book -> Make sure Download Full Details is checked -> Ok -> Wait for download. One thig to add incase you created a new OABis to make sure that your E2K7mailbox databases are using the correct E2K7 OAB. if you still face the same isssue after applying Amit steps and making sure that the DB is having the correct OAB then please go to the Sync Issue folder in outlook and see what's reportedMohamed Baher | MSFT | MCA:Exchange 2007 | http://blogs.technet.com/mbaher/

Hi,If you can see the GAL updated in Exchange Management Console, from OWA we also can see the updated GAL, but we cannot see the updated GAL in outlook? It is by design. OWA will do an LDAP query which is why it immediately shows the updated display name (Immediately is based on a 1 DC environment. With multiple DCs replication of course will take time, at least 15 minutes).Outlook on the other hand goes through NSPI. NSPI won't reflect the change until the hierarchy table has been rebuilt. By default this is done every 720 minutes (12 hours). You can try to change it to 1.Note: Related parameter on DC isNTDS\Parameters\Hierarchy Table Recalculation interval (minutes).Make sure that you back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up, restore, and modify the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.Note: After outlook can see the modified address list, please changevalue onHierarchy Table Recalculation interval (minutes) back to 720.Regards,Xiu

Hi everyone, after updating GAL, OAB andrun: Update-FileDistributionService -Identity Server1 -Type "OAB" and updating address book from outlook; I'm still not getting the right GAL. I checked on the logs andlook like OAB isbeenupdated successfully (Process MSExchangeFDS.exe (PID=5164). Offline Address Book data synchronization task has completed successfully. OAB name: "JFS OAB", Guid: ac39dfb4-1859-4c85-86a8-2cca0b68f537).To confirm this , I setup outlook after all these updates and then I get the right GAL however if I tried to update the address book from outlook then I would go back to wrong GAL, and if I delete all the oldOAB old files , then I will get the right OAB but as soon as it get updated would go back to the wrong one. After few days now I'm getting a new error whenever I click send receive : 10:03:15 Synchronizer Version 11.0.6352 10:03:15 Synchronizing Mailbox 'Cesar Naar' 10:03:15 Done 10:03:16 Microsoft Exchange offline address book 10:03:16 0X8004010F Now it look like the OAB is not even been found ?When updating GALon theEMC , I'm getting this : C:\Documents and Settings\jfsadmin\Desktop>get-globalAddressList|update-glo balAddressList WARNING: The recipient "jfsadmin.corp/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Schedule+ Free Busy Information - First Administrative Group" is invalid and could not be updated. WARNING: The recipient "jfsadmin.corp/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Offline Address Book - First Administrative Group" is invalid and could not be updated. Yes I did find a solution after installing all windows updates and reeboting the server .....; maybe it was just the reebot that finally make GAL update the address book ; On most XP sp2 got updated by itself and on few I had to delete manually the OAB files , and that's it ....Well hope you find a solution too , Good luck

This is happenng to some, but not all, of my Outlook clients. Seems very random. One tech suggested that people in the front of the alpabet are getting updates while the last half are not and getting sync errors. The only way we have found to fix this is to eitherdelete the old OAB files or take the client off of cache mode. Delete OAB files. Close Outlook Go to > Document and Settings > the users folder > local settings hidden folder ***> application data > Microsoft > Outlook delete all the .oab files (may need to show extensions). Outlook will download and recreate these. Restart Outlook. It will take a few minutes to open because it is downloading a new address book. *** If you do not see Local Settings, with the window opened, go to tools, down to folder options, click the view tab, in the advanced settings window you want to select show hidden files and folders. Also, uncheck Hide extensions.Cache Mode Close Outlook, go to Mail Setup, Account Settings, click the account, Change Email Account. Uncheck Use Cached Exchagne Mode. This will force the client to go to the server instead of it's localOAB file. I'm sure there is a little performance hit but it is better than mad bosses!Fred
