Global Address List not upto date for Outlook 2002 Clients - All fine for 2007 Clients
Hi. I have a problem with our GAL. It seems that any client connecting via Outlook 2002 (SP3) does not get an upto date address list. The get an address list, but people who have been added into AD in the last week or so are not showing. Users using Outlook 2007 get the correct up to date version, using either cache or online mode. Also, if the user using Outlook 2002 then logs into a PC with 2007 installed, they get the latest version. When looking at the address book on a 2002 client, under the properties of the Global Address List, it shows the Micrsoft Exchange Address Book Provider as the EXCHANGE 2007 Server, whilst if i do the same on a 2007 client, it shows one of our GC servers. I have tried running an updaet-globaladdresslist but nothing is updated. I think the problem stems from some changes i made to the OAB, outlook 2007 clients were getting sync errors, as they couldnt download the address book - since i have fixed that(republished the OAB / changed settings on the autodiscover service) this issue seems to have started. One other point to make is that under the public folder system tree, there is the Offline Address Book folder: under that there are 2 sub folders, one is correct for the address lists (with 3 sub folders for the different OAB versions) then another one, which has the default CN for EX:/o=<organisation name>/ou=exchange administrative group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) My only thought is that the 2002 clients are looking at this instead of the proper one. If anyone could help with this issue i would be grateful Cheers Ian

Make sure you have OAB version 2 listed in the default PF tree... Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

yup it is there, under the /o=<organisation name>/cn=addrlists/cn=Offline Address Book there is: OAB version 2 OAB version 3a OAB version 4 Interestingly, if i try to update this folder from the right click context menu i get an error: -------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft Exchange Error -------------------------------------------------------- Action 'Update Content' could not be performed on object 'OAB Version 2'. OAB Version 2 Failed Error: Cannot start content replication against public folder '\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\OFFLINE ADDRESS BOOK\/o=See/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Offline Address Book\OAB Version 2' on public folder database 'EMBER\First Storage Group\Public Folders'. You sure that PF database is associated with Mailbox Store? Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

In EMC navigate to Server Config then click on Mailbox then select your EX2007 server select the mailbox store right click on it and the click on properties then select the client settings and check for Default PF database and ofline addressbook if it not there then associate the respective object Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

yup both are correct.

Hi Ian, Firstly, please understand that traditionally, Outlook clients (before 2003) used the offline address book only when it was working offline (now referred to as Classic Offline Mode). For your reference: Configuring Outlook Clients http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996502(EXCHG.65).aspx Therefore, please let me know whether the GAL is not updated in only Offline Mode or both Online and Offline Mode. If the issue occurs both in Offline and Online Mode, I think the issue does not relate to OAB. I suspect that the issue related to AD replication. I suggest you refer to following KB to force the Outlook XP connects to the GC which Outlook 2007 connects with to check whether the issue can be reproduced. How to configure Outlook to a specific global catalog server or to the closest global catalog server http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319206/en-us Note: Please ensure the Outlook XP connects to correct GC: How to Identify your Global Catalog Server Using Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2002 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317209/en-us Mike

Thanks Mike, Yeah, i only thought about the OAB due to it being a problem prior to this happening. I think the main problem now is that the Outlook 2002 clients are using the exchange server as their global catalog server (as seen in the properties of the address book) which is completely wrong, as the Exchange server is not a GC! I will try making the registry changes and get back to you. Thanks for your help Ian

Right, so have made the change to the registry, so that it is set to a specific GC. This now works. The problem being, is that we have over 200 2002 clients, and i don't really want to have to change this globally, as if something happens to that GC, then i have to manually change it again. Do you have any thoughts on why the 2002 clients are looking at the Exchange server instead of a GC? and do you think that the problem lies with the exchange servers AD replication? Thanks again for the help

Hi Ian, Thanks for your response. I understand that after configuring the Outlook 2002 to connect to specific GC, the issue could be solved. Firstly, please understand that the Directory Service Proxy (DSProxy) is the Exchange component which provides Outlook (MAPI) clients with an address book service. DSProxy has two core functions: 1. NSPI Proxy: Emulates an NSPI Provider by accepting NSPI requests and blindly (i.e. without conversion) proxies them to GC. The response is then proxied from the GC back to the client. 2. Referral Service: This service will provide the name of a GC to a requesting NSPI client (Outlook). The NSPI client can then connect directly to the GC and bypass the Exchange Server. Based on your description, the Outlook XP uses the Exchange NSPI Proxy to proxy the request from Outlook to GC server. Therefore, the Global Address List property shows the Exchange Server name instead of GC server. Nevertheless, as the NSPI Proxy blindly proxies the request to GC, I think the issue does not relate to which DSProxy function is used. I think the issue occurs because the GC server which NSPI Proxy used to proxy request do not have the latest replication. Or network issues which result in request result missed. To check which GC server is connected by NSPI Proxy function, I suggest you increase diagnostic logging for NSPI Proxy on the Mailbox server: Set-eventloglevel msexchangesa\nspi proxy level expert After that, please have problem Outlook 2002 client logon, you should get a 9142 event like below: NSPI Proxy listener thread listening on transport Tcp/Ip created a new connection between a client and Global Catalog dc.lab.com. After that, please check whether the new created user exists on the GC server indicated by the event 9142. Please also ensure the user has correct showInaddressbook and msExchHideFromAddressLists attributes set. Mike

Thanks so much for the help Mike, it seems that it was the Exchange server not being in sync with the GCs. Once i had resoleved that - all users had a proper GAL Thanks again Ian
